I was comparing the sound through headphones (same headphones) through the Yamaha N3x and a U1 TA2 transacoustic.

I was shocked to find they were dramatically different despite both having the same cfx binaural sound samples.

The sound when connected to the N3x was rich, loud, and with depth. In comparison, the U1 TA2 was pathetic. It was much quieter without the same richness.

I was negotiating a YUS5 TA2 compared and wanted to try the N1x for the grand action. They didn't have a N1x so I played around with the N3x instead.

Since >75% of my playing will be through headphones or through speakers / transacoustic with the volume low (apartment setting) it matters a lot to me.

Does anyone know if this was to be expected?

It could be that the TA2 uses a different headphone amplifier (and other sound generation hardware) to that of the N3X.

Kind regards,
James

I agree that it must be the case... Do you think it is fixable by placing a DAC / pre-amp like the Marantz HD-DAC1 on the transacoustic?

On the transacoustic, I was quite impressed with the sound through the headphones on the N3x, but then so disappointed on the U1 TA2. Perhaps, as you said, there was not enough power on the TA2 amp to overcome the impedence on the headphones.

I called Yamaha and they said the sampling of the cfx concert grand used for the N3x is different than the transacoustic. He said the N3x uses spatial acoustic sampling which the transacoustic does not use. I thought the spatial acoustic sampling was meant for playing through the speakers on the piano itself, but he said it was for the cfx sound sample too.
