I need some help in buying my wife a digital piano. I know nothing about them. She usually plays at home as a hobby and at church when they need a player. She's played on our acoustic wurlitzer we got about 10 years ago for free, and on her family's ROLAND MP70. I'm thinking about:
KAWAI CN29
YAMAHA YDP184
KAWAI CA48
KAWAI CA58
YAMAHA CLP 635

Any other suggestions or input on any of those would be much appreciated.

In such situations, the advice is always the same:

Do not buy the piano without involving your wife. Let her try out the different models and let her decide which one to buy.

Supporting JoBert's advice, and if you have to choose which pianos to try first, I suggest to pick CA58 and CLP635, these models are slightly more advanced than the rest on your list.

I third the motion to have your wife involved in choosing the piano. She is the one playing it and should like the touch/action of the piano.

All these years playing and I still consider myself a novice.

Hi Sergio,

The first limiting factor is price.
That depends upon two factors: country you're buying in and whether you are open to the used market.

The second limiting factor is digital piano type: are you wanting a cabinet piano (with inbuilt speakers in wood), a portable piano (no wooden cabinet but has inbuilt speaker and fairly good stand), or stage piano (metal stand, external monitors etc).

In general terms, the best approach is to decide on price point, then draw up the shortlist of pianos.. Local factors such as availability to demo the instruments are a concern, but you should always try before buying in general. As it's for her, it is her subjective assessement that counts.

Kind regards,

Doug.

I like to add that my wife likes the Yamaha sound and I much prefer the Kawai sounds. It is what it is. Since your wife is the one playing you should let her decide which model she feels a connection with.

Hello Sergio S,

All of the instruments on your list will be superior to the Roland that your wife currently uses. However, as others have noted, the piano is a very personal instrument, therefore it's important to involve her the decision making process.

Best of luck!

Kind regards,
James
