Yamaha Upright Damper Pedal Adjustment Problem #2945931 02/12/20 10:57 AM

Hi All,

First post, joining the forum seeking advice on my damper pedal. Please forgive if my terminology is not completely accurate.

I own a Japanese-built Yamaha UX3. The damper pedal has a lot of play before the sustain engages, and I have read that an average pedal should only depress 1/4" before there should be some release of the dampers from the strings.

Regarding adjustment, the wingnut behind the damper pedal is already fully tightened and can go no further. It doesn't seem like it should be this tight and still have so much play in the pedal.

The vertical damper rod to the left is metal with nylon pins on each end. It almost seems as though the rod is slightly too short. Should there be spacing washers at the pins? Any other cause to consider?

Thank you for any advice you might be able to provide!

Possibly the vertical rods have gotten mixed up. Take them out and compare. Then experiment with changing them.

Hi Peter,

Thank you for the tip. I removed both rods, and the rod from the soft pedal was slightly longer than that coming from the damper pedal. This didn't seem right based on the relative travel distances, so I swapped them, and now everything appears to work correctly with more reasonable-looking adjustments on the pedal wingnuts.

Thanks again!
