Late last night I heard that Lyle Mays, Pianist/Composer/Arranger formerly with the Pat Mehteny Group, passed away. I have seen him perform with the PMG at least half a dozen times. To me, his playing was very unique and brought exactly what was needed in every recording and performance. Over the past years I wondered what he was doing and hoping that one day he would perform again. The last recording I had of his was The Ludwigsburg Concert (Naxos, 2016). I was already missing him, not hearing or seeing him at all perform.
R.I.P.

This is a huge loss for our jazz community. He was one of the truly great and original modern players, and his work with Pat is completely EPIC. You gotta admire his Glenn Gouldish decision to leave the public world, also. His music will live forever. God bless him.

Been listening to a lot of Lyle since he passed I always was a fan, but digging deeper really appreciating how people described him playing in a arrangers way. His played for the song not himself he will be missed. Even Metheny's music changed after Lyly retired from PMG.

Thank you Lyle for all the music you gave us. RIP
