I posted years ago about ongoing trapezius pain that was affecting my ability to play. Even though I was told I was crazy, I continued to go to many Drs about it because the pain was overwhelming. Last month the right tests were ordered and they showed partial paralysis of my trapezius, paraspinal, and neck muscles because of a rare autoimmune neuropathy (my legs are also affected). I am also "lucky" enough to have an inflammatory arthritis similar to RA.

Does anyone deal with neuropathy, arthritis and/or medical conditions(s) that result in physical limitations? How has that affected your ability to play? What strategies do you use to make things easier and to avoid injury?

Any suggestions on how to balance medical conditions and piano would be greatly appreciated. I would like to continue to play, minimize pain, and avoid injury.

Sounds like you're talking about CIDP, which I have. It hasn't affected my torso, but the neuropathy has affected my legs--toes to knees. This makes pedaling difficult because of not being able to feel much, so subtlety is not there. It has also affected my fingers slightly, but doesn't seem to be a problem. I don't know that there are any particular strategies to overcome these problems, except to be careful to not overdo practice, and if something hurts, stop.

Wish I could be more helpful--for both of us!

Yes unfortunately it's CIDP. It's hard to limit my time spent playing. I'm attempting different schedules to see if I can get multiple small practice sessions in a day rather than one long one. I still get carried away though.

I’m just a sloppy beginner so I snuck into this forum from the ABF but I have RA and neuropathy that mainly bothers me in my left hand and legs. I feel for you Ender_Wiggin. I’m going to drs as well but they aren’t offering much hope. I try to warm and stretch my hands and stay hydrated due to cramps, so far I’m able to practice. I wish I could help.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. Compared to you, what I have seems a joke: I have osteoarthritis in my fingers, some issues with carpal tunnel (from a former, typing-intense job) and smaller injuries that keep flaring up if I'm not super careful, such as rotator cuff and tendonitis in my forearm.

What I do is:
- Warm up before practice (the way dobro mentioned above).
- Practice up to an hour at a time, no more.
- Make absolutely sure my technique is fine (no raising my shoulders or dropping my wrists or any of the other sins that are harmless in moderation to a healthy person, but will make one of my issues flare up faster than you can say Czerny).

There are piano teachers who specialise on management of injury or other impediments, technique and recovery. Might it be worth booking a number of sessions with one of those?

I hope you'll find a way to deal with this and still play. All the best!
