It seems to get increasingly hard to find a good private teacher, even in big cities.

By private I mean that I communicate exclusively with the teacher, no third parties overhearing my discussions or tracing my money.

Students do not seem to post ads on their music school anymore?

When you search online, you do find some students; but they are all working with some online company. You must pay to the company first, who than pays the students later a fraction of what you paid. Cash payment not possible. Students are not allowed to mail directly with the students. There is also a shipload of additional terms that you are getting into. An increasing part of the payment goes to these companies, prices for me are going up while the teacher's salaries seem to be dropping. If you look at the terms, the company seems to "own" these teachers, yet the companies advertise these teachers as 'independent'. That gives me the impression that this is just a way to avoid their social security obligations.

I had to reject 2 teachers already because I do not agree with these terms.

I'm just wondering what is going on here. Is it just me and am I looking at the wrong places? Is this due to changed rules at conservatories and music schools? Do students not have to teach anymore as part of their education:? Is there some new laws causing this?

I had a pretty easy time finding a good piano teacher in New York City. No middlemen.

Just ask at local piano stores, they usually have a list of local teachers.

I have never heard of this. You should be able to contact a teacher directly by email and arrange a trial lesson. In UK piano teachers are independent. If you have no luck you can always trial online lessons.

I second trying a local piano store.

All these years playing and I still consider myself a novice.

Why are you looking for a student to be your teacher?

https://www.mtna.org and the local state organizations all have lists of teachers.

I did not mean to exclude non-students.

But I had good experiences with student teachers in the past.

I just googled for a piano teacher in my town and found my teacher's website. I cross referenced her name with a state accrediting board for music teachers. I figured that made her more legit. lol I'm not sure if that is true, but she is a good teacher and there are no middle men between us, I just pay her directly when I see her.

What a bizarre thread.

If anything, big cities are inundated with piano teachers and their personal websites, which include contact information.

The problem is getting through the clutter and finding gems.

You would think so. But I have a hard time finding private teachers.
Anyway I found one within an hour drive :-) Trial lesson somewhere in march. Thanks!

Out of curiosity, what is it about student teachers that you think makes them good for you?

I found mine on Thumbtack. I pay him directly via check right there in the studio. He was the first one I talked to and they're all like that.

I went through two teachers and talked to a couple more before I found a teacher I like. I didn't like the typically local teachers just regurgitating the same old method books. I just checked out Youtubes of pianists who music style I like and checked their websites to see if they do Skype lessons. I like Skype lessons because you can record them to rewatch later and most accept PayPal so I can just sent them money directly no stores involved.

So talk to someone whose playing you like and ask if they teach and if they don't teach themselves a lot time they can recommend someone.
