I'm shocked, pretty literally -- more so than I'd usually be about someone that I wasn't personally close with. I did meet him and talk with him once, but I feel like it goes beyond just that. Maybe it's that his whole everything seemed so youthful and young and fresh....I just think of him as young and very alive.

Very sad.

I heard Mr. Serkin accompany Benny Goodman in 1970 in NYC (the two Brahms Clarinet Sonatas) then again in 1976 when he, Richard Stoltzman, Ida Kavafian and Fred Sherry (the Tashi Quartet) performed a chamber music concert in Lincoln, Nebraska. Spoke with him briefly after the Lincoln concert. I recently purchased a CD of Tashi's landmark 1975 recording of Messiaen's "Quartet for the End of Time." I'll be listening to it now with deeper appreciation.

He had quite a career. I too continue to think of him as a young man.

And I heard them that same year at Lincoln Center, which of course must be right next door.

(I would put my usual smilie on there, if not for the subject matter at hand.)

Funny thing - the recital I heard him play with Goodman in May 1970 took place in Alice Tully Hall in LINCOLN CENTER.

Here's the review.....

I guess Lincoln Nebraska and Lincoln Center must be named after the same guy....or perhaps not.

But I digress.......

I saw him play Bartok 3 in 2012 when I went to Brevard, and it was wonderful. Sad to hear of his passing.

I am pretty sure I saw him in one of the Tiffany Poon videos last year, when she first got to Yale, and they were going over Schumann Papillons in a classroom. The video seems to have been taken down.

I remember he played Schubert Moment Musical as encore in the only concert I saw him (probably more than 15 years ago?).
