My antenna is similar to the Winegard HD7000R, which is just $38 at your shop. I would get that just for fun. A good antenna can give you more stations, clearer signal, and better audio quality. With your nifty receiver, it would be worth connecting just for the occasional weekend live concert on WQXR. It folds up for easy storage in the box.

That antenna is about 8 feet wide and 5 feet high. My wife is not going to cast a friendly eye on it if it is standing up in the living room, sigh. I don’t have any place to hide it.

That would be a problem. These are foldable and the box is small. Folding takes me about 60 seconds but that is not an enjoyable 60 seconds.

To me, radio is akin to acoustical rape.

That's because you're listening to the wrong radio station smirk .

Try this:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000cz33

Incidentally, 2020 is Luddy's year and I can't think of a better intro to his music - by way of the Second Viennese School, of course whistle.
No, I don't work for the Beeb. But my digital radio is permanently tuned to Radio 3, and it also has the highest bit rate (or whatever you call it) of any DAB radio station in the world.

Sigh. I was done and then you called radio announcers morons. I learned so much over the years listening to the announcers on classical music stations, such as NPR, which basically doesn’t have advertisers. What do I learn from streaming? Nothing, unless I Google constantly and that was not possible back in the day when I was trapped in a car for over two hours a day.

But, to echo the last poster, yeah, you’re listening to the wrong radio stations.

One can listen to radio on headphones, to tie it into the thread. I like Denons.

BBC Radio 3 online streaming is 320kbps, which is good. But it's nothing like that over DAB. DAB in the UK in general is a joke. We have been saddled with a poor standard of DAB. FM is quite superior to DAB as it currently stands, which is why FM still exists, years after its scheduled demise. I am confident FM will outlive the current standard of DAB.

DAB radios are very finicky about the signal strength in many places and also notoriously power hungry (which is hardly in tune with the times). Even the good ones will only go for about 100 hours on a set of batteries. Decent old FM radios would run for months on one PP9 battery.

I listen to Mac radio. It's not really radio. It's a thumb-drive in my car.

It has all the music I like. And I can tell it what to play, whenever I want. And there are no commercials. smile

I don't listen to any stations. My Smartphone has a 128GB microSD card, so I can take my complete archive on the go.

Whenever I encounter radio it's because other people have it blaring and they listen to really primitive stations with commentary so bad it reminds me of of the movie idiocracy. Oh well, what do I expect from the common man. *chuckles*

As for learning: when I want to learn I read a book/website. I listen to music to switch off and relax, not to dump more (mostly trivial) data into my brain.

Um, guys, some serious topic drift going on here... I'm starting to feel sorry for other peeps who come along looking for headphone talk, y'know? shocked

How about starting an FM radio thread, or whatever?

Any votes for AKG Q701? If anything, they are super light and comfy.

Hey guys—just to follow up, since this topic still seems active:

I've done more research on these Samson headphones, and apparently they're modeled after AKG K240 Studio Headphones, widely used as neutral "reference" 'phones for studio mixes.

I've now audaciously taken my Samsons into my local music store and actually compared them with the AKGs, and I'll be damned if I can tell the difference. My best guess is, this obscure Asian company just took apart some of the AKGs, and analyzed and cloned them.

I've really been enjoying using these away from my DP, too, for music and movie soundtracks. Last night I watched one of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies (I hadn't seen them again since they came out), and was blown away with the clarity, and how realistically the sounds seemed to be placed around me.

Anyway, I've already gushed about these, to the extent that some of you wondered if I might be on the Samson payroll. (That's quite funny... I doubt Samson would consider it worth their time to write this much about their products for the benefit of a few dozen people, in a specific part of a specific forum—even if they had any reasonable way of knowing about it in the first place!)

And as I think I've explained, I didn't believe the other people's posts about these, either. I was fully prepared to return them when it turned out that, no, some $60 phones, from a manufacturer I'd never heard of, weren't really that good. So if you still doubt me, do what I did: Order some from Amazon and them for free. They'll even pick up the return postage for you... How can you complain about that?

BTW, I can't help wondering: If these are "reference" phones people use for mixes, why would anyone need anything fancier? To boost or reduce certain frequencies away from the original mix? But why would you want to do that? And if you did, couldn't you just use EQ?

Well, you guys rock, and I'll stop bothering you now. – A.

Five or ten years ago there were some members here who liked the AKG K240 phones. But little has been said about them since. Anyway ... they're hard to find in the shops.

I've never seen Samsons anywhere except for one time many years ago on the rack at a Sam Ash store. And there's been little written about them here.

LOL—I just came back to edit my last post. I decided I'd already babbled enough about these 'phones, and was going to remove everything except the bit about how much I'm enjoying them for non-DP stuff too. But now that someone's replied, it seems sneaky to go back and edit.

Anyway, I'm sorry if I've bored any of you, or otherwise overdone it with my praise. I'm just happy, and still amazed these could be so cheap. blush

1. For listening to music on wired headphones - HiFiMAN Sundara, HiFiMAN 400i, etc.

2. For using with the digital piano, the easily driven - Sennheiser HD599.

3. For travelling on the train, or in a noisy environment, with bluetooth, then Sony WH-1000XM3.

No apology is needed. And no boredom was felt.

Audio-Technica ATH-M50X - I'm now using this pair and I'm totally happy with this purchase. It offers the amazing sound quality, the leather feels amazing on my ears, and after over a year of daily use, they have not failed me once.
Sennheiser HD 599 SE - This was my previous headphones pair, quite pricey than Audio-Technica but sounds good for its price.
Sony MDR-7506 - My first ones; a budget option for those who want a clear sound for a moderate price.
