After nearly 2 years of looking for a wonderful used grand piano, I finally gave up and bought a new Kawai GX-2 at Piano Vertu in Montreal. It was shipped to my home in Ottawa and to my horror I found it didn't sound anywhere near as lovely as it did in the store. The main issue is the treble section, which has an uneven sound, with notes going from super bright/shrill, to almost dead sounding (like a toy piano) to no volume. Max at Piano Vertu was amenable to covering the cost of 2 tunings and voicing (instead of the usual one). A first-rate technician has been here twice in the last 8 months, and while the sound has improved a lot, there is still a section in the treble that is most unsatisfactory. Playing anything with a singing melody in the right hand is not enjoyable. (I'm playing a Schubert sonata and it's full of uneven sounding passages.) I will have the tech return in the spring for another tuning and voicing.
I'm told new pianos get better with age. I hope this is true.  It has been the biggest disappointment of my life (and the second biggest outlay of cash after buying a house!!)If anyone has en encouraging word, I'd love to hear it!  Or even a sympathetic one. Thanks all,
Kathy
P.S On the positive side, the tenor & bass sections sound really nice.P.P.S. Yes that is a whole lot of snow outside my front window...

Oh dear! Sorry you are not completely happy: it sure is a gorgeous piano to look at!

How long have you had it? Maybe it needs to "settle in"? I'm afraid I'm not familiar with having a grand (yet. Or a "new" acoustic for that matter), but I do hope it gets better for you.

Will the dealer accept the piano back? Any chance the salesperson/store owner would travel to your place to hear it in person?

Keep us updated!

Edit: Just saw you are in Ottawa and bought the piano in Montreal.

Is the piano they delivered the same serial number as the one in the store?

That's a great idea: I am sure other folks might have some valuable suggestions.

Thanks for the replies. Yes it's the same serial number. It was delivered in May 2019, so about 8 months ago. Different room acoustics but still...
As for a trade-up, within 5 years I would have to purchase something that's double the amount of the original purchase price or at least three professional levels up, whatever that means (waiting to hear back from the store for an explanation). I loved the Estonia 5'6" they had in the store, but my budget is being stretched as it is with the Kawai.
Good idea about posting on the main Piano Forum. I thought the new piano forum was for anyone with a new-to-them instrument, thanks for letting me know that it's more for "happy" owners...

Wow, a GX2 is pretty high up the Kawai food chain. If you can't get it straightened out through the dealer, you might try contacting Kawai to see if they'll send one of their super techs to look at it.

I'm sorry to hear about that, especially as I love Kawai pianos and it's my dream to have one, one day.

I'm no expert about this topic in any way, shape or form. But if the piano sounded good in the store, but not in your house - then doesn't that perhaps imply either of two options?

1. The piano was damaged/changed in some way on the journey to your house.

2. Or the problem is related to room acoustics, rather than the piano itself. I.e. the acoustics in the room are responsible for the discrepancy between how it sounded in the store compared to how it sounds in your house. Perhaps there is a way you can improve your room acoustics, so the piano will sound like it did in the store?

Yes I could try contacting Kawai. Don't know if they would send someone over but it's worth a try.
As for room acoustics, it's a possibility, though I do have a thin area rug on the floor and a family heirloom quilt on the wall to absorb the sound. It seems like it's more of a voicing thing, the tech worked on a whole bunch of notes in the treble when he was here in December, but there is still so much unevenness. Also I don't find the tone sings as I would like, the sound seems to die off fairly quickly.
