There's no need.

Why would you want to burn your new headphones? That is a waste of money. If you feel like burning something, go out into the woods and burn an old pair of sneakers or something! grin

There's only anecdotal evidence that there's such thing as burning in of headphones or speakers. Even if there is, just using them will do the job. If you're really concerned, leave them plugged in a computer with some music running for 24 hours smile

Oh, he didn’t mean literally burning them, but more like figuratively breaking them. My bad! blush

But it would also be a waste of time to figuratively break them, since headphones aren't sentient and thus usually won't suffer long-term emotional trauma!

OP: I find the best way to break headphones is to just use them for playing piano. After about an hour they are screaming for anyone to end their misery.

Okay, so literally breaking them means taking a hammer to the 599, but figuratively breaking them relates to a form of emotional distress. I believe we have a grammatical paradox in our hands, figuratively? wink

@Rockatansky: I presume this is NOT what you meant: https://tinyurl.com/tarjg9w

@Pete14 ... Are you peterws in diguise? smile

@CG: I never bought into the burn-in notion, but ...
When I got new Sennheiser phones two years ago they sounded pretty poor the first day. I used them for only about 15 minutes. But the next day they sounded fine. Whuzzup with that?

You can break them in by wearing them. On your head. Literally. Not figuratively.

Don't know about burning in, but I may have burnt out some headphones. Liteguratively. Not in a sense of having a burnout and not in the sense of being a pile of ash either. Just distorting. Literally. Not figuratively as in altering the truth.

Or maybe it's all just in my head.

Dt880-770-990/Sennheiser HD6xx-58x are already very much up there in terms of quality. It won’t get significantly better unless you’re willing to pay significantly more. Past this price point you might get a different frequency response, but saying what sounds better or worse becomes more and more personal preference, and it also depends on what piano samples you’re playing. if I had to upgrade from any of these, I’d go straight for the Focal Clear that are incredibly good in every aspect, but also incredibly pricey. Otherwise, try a bunch of similarly expensive alternatives with a different sound profile like the AKG7xx. Some people say the AKGs work very well for piano and classical sounds but I haven’t tried them personally. If I were you I’d just stick with what I have, unless you are not satisfied with your current ones.

HD 599 are still quite budget headphones (at least if you get a bargain).

Within the Sennheiser range, a step up would be anything with higher numbers - like the Sennheiser HD 600, HD 650, HD 700, HD 800 etc.

Or headphones from another brand that sell for more than about $120+ could potentially be a step up.

However, those other Sennheisers have much higher impedance than the HD 599 - so they might require a headphone amplifier.

It's also possible that your brain adjusted to the sound, after you heard them the day before?
