I was hoping someone could direct me to a string supplier that could offer replacement strings for a vintage upright Mason and Hamlin. I'm assuming there are places that can offer them based off the serial number. I primarily want to replace the bass strings, but am having some trouble finding a source. Any help would be appreciated.

My piano had strings made by GC Piano in Toronto. Others also like JD Grandt also in the Toronto area. Either of them can make strings to fit your vintage M&H.

Paul.

I doubt anyone could make a set without a pattern, unless they have been around a long time, like Mapes or Schaff. Even then it is not likely.

Oh ye of little faith. JD Grandt has instructions on how to make a bass string set pattern

So you're right, it's not likely, though they can do it if you do some measuring smile

See also here for ordering custom made bass string sets.

Paul.

They all have methods of making a pattern, but that is not what TimboD asked.

Probably the bass string maker with the most extensive instructions and help for the DIYer is Arledge bass strings. They sell a measuring kit, and have videos showing step by step how to install the strings. I bought a set from J.D. Grandt, and they were very helpful. I haven't installed them yet, but when I do, I'll probably refer to Arledge's videos.

No, he asked for people who could make strings ... and your answer was not really that helpful was it?

Paul.

Gentlemen. I appreciate your zeal, but being a DIYer, all suggestions are helpful. Hitting right at the heart of the question is good, but I'm learning and would like all the tools in my tool box I can get. Thank you to each of you.
