It's been sitting in the garage since this morning. When for once you don't have time to play with something you've ordered it arrives almost before it was sent. Typical. Tomorrow, hopefully!

PS: Not to nitpick, but I presume your N1X was tuned to A3=380 Hz, not 38000 Hz which wouldn't be fun to listen to at all. Or did I entirely misread what you wrote?

Yep, you're right!

How can A3 be tuned to 380? Normally it's at 220. Some historic tunings would have it bit lower.
But A3 at 380? That's just about midway between F#4 and G4 !

I get what you're implying, Mac, and you're right if you're counting the lowest C as 1. I'm not sure there are strict rules on that. In Yamaha N1X terms the top key on the keyboard is C7, making middle C C3. I think.

I think the usual way of counting is to have B0, A0, C1.... which makes it A4, but then there'd be two C7s in Yamaha language.

On a more on-topic note, I've now assembled the N1X and found a few things to be missing and a nasty scratch on one of the legs. Bah! I have yet to turn it on.

I don't know the alphabet. It's obviously A0, B0, C1 in the above post, not B0, A0, C1.

I think the surface is not treated with an antistatic coating. As a result, the N1X is a dust magnet. My housekeeper wipes my N1X down weekly, and yet it still is dusty all the time.

I think there's a secret device installed in the N1X pianos that will suck all the dust from the entire universe. If someone else has another explanations, I'd be glad to hear it 😡

What's "missing" on your N1X?

CG, I looked through the N1X manual and much existing info on the instrument online; however, I did not find anything on this ‘secret device’ you mention.......Oh wait, it’s supposed to be a secret? Okay, I get it. wink

You need to press sustain pedal and a play a secret chord sequence to deactivate it. People keep searching it every day to no avail...

@DavidB

The headphone sanger and screws are missing. Also one of the fixating screws are bent. Nothing serious.

I've turned it on now and it sounds incredibly dull, even on maximum volume. I think I've made a huge mistake placing it on a soft rug.

At a minimum, you need to ask your merchant to arrange to mail you replacement headphone hanger and screws. Also, there should be a screw under the pedal box reaching the floor. Is there?

Iøm already on it, Tyrone. They're registered it and are taking action. I think. I told them it wasn't an immediate problem. The screw under the pedal box is there and in place.

I've played a bit now and the action is quite a work-out for my fingers. I'm unsure of whether it's because it's still very stiff or because the sound is so dull that I'm unconsciously banging on it. It's probably a bit of both.

The design has grown on me as well. I think it's quite pretty, actually.

Ha, so true. I just keep a dusting cloth next to it now and wipe it down every day before I practice. And it lasts for about 10 seconds.

I've given up and made it the responsibility of the housekeeper - it's hopeless. I just accept that I'm playing music on a giant black dust bunny.

In my case the secret device is called Newton, has whiskers and loves grooming by the side of the N1X.

Hi folks, looking at that video:
https://youtu.be/pFY8WF6vt4U
the upright piano NU1X seems much more spontanious and powerful than the grand N1X.

In other words do you guys think playing a boogie or jazzy pieces might sound as good with the N1X either?

I'm not sure what you mean by that? What specifically lead to you this conclusion? The style of music he played on either?

It could sound this way in the video due to volume levels between the two pianos, as well as the difference in speakers/placement. The N1X is an incredibly powerful piano. Do you mean the attack of the NU1X is more apparent? Because it sounds like this is due to the volume level of the piano, where it even clips the audio at some point.

Maybe it's just the style.
But I don't know even one video where a N1X is played like the guy is playing the NU1X (boogie or just a kind of jazz). So I am just asking myself whether for those kind of music, an upright would be the better choice?
