A friend (I swear, it's not me--I wish it were) is pricing out a new Steinway M. Glossy black, no player system, northeast USA.

Could someone who knows more than me give a range of prices you might expect to pay--from "you really got a great deal", to "nothing special, but not getting gouged", to "if you'd pay that I've got a bridge in brooklyn for you" so she can feel a little more confident about whether she's being taken or not?

Past that, it's up to her, and she's not looking for perfect accuracy or to hold anybody to it, it's just that neither of us are currently familiar enough with the market to evaluate whether she's in the ballpark or not with competitive pricing.

Thanks in advance!

Well, the list price of a new Steinway M in high gloss ebony is $76,600. Discounts on new Steinways are very small if not nonexistent. I’d say $68,400 would be about the lowest you can expect, but even then, don’t get your hopes up. This is why I’m not a big Steinway fan myself. IMO There’s just far better pianos for a lot less.

I got 10% off new B of my choice of 6 in Texas, so not same region. I just don’t believe they won’t discount. Depends on several variables I’m sure.
