Hello folks!

I'm struggling with the best fingering for this section of the Chopin Scherzo #2.

This is toward the end of the piece, when the original theme reprises, and Chopin does some bizarre modulations before arriving at the triumphant D-flat chord.

I can't find a fingering that allows me to play up to speed.

Any suggestions?

I think you need to be specific about the measure(s) involved. Did you try looking on IMSLP for different fingered editions?

In the image, it's starting at the 2nd staff (A flat - E - G E) where I need help.

Do you have fairly small hands? Most people would use 5-3-2-1.

Can you play with it 5-3-2-1 with a lot of 'wrist rotation'?

A flexible wrist helps enormously with big reaches. For instance, his ├ętude Op.25/1 is all about wrist rotation unless you have gigantic paws.

I play some of those 5-1-2-1-2-4, or 5-1-2-1-2-3.

Are you able to play it up to speed using that fingering?

Fingering does not need to have an impact on speed. I am guessing that you are probably trying too hard to hit the right notes.

I don't agree.

When playing something fast, the wrong fingering (for your anatomy) can make the difficult impossible. There have been many pieces in which I originally practiced a certain fingering - often the plausible one given by the editor - only to find that it has to be changed when I started pushing the speed up to performance tempo. I get the impression that many editors are either very mediocre pianists or they just never tried to play the pieces at performance tempi, judging from their inept fingerings.......

On the other hand, if you're playing a slow piece - or any piece slowly enough -, almost any fingering will work. Just keep the pedal down, and everything will sound OK...... wink

Yes, but only with a relaxed thumb that's positioned entirely by the arm so it doesn't reach.

You can alternate these fingerings with 5-3-2-1-2-3.
