Back in the 70s, my parents had a floor lamp by the baby grand. Brass, traditional shade, swing over head if I remember correctly. The coolest thing was that the switch was in the tube between the base and the swing arm. 3-way, pull down on the tube = one click. I haven’t seen anything like it on line. Does anyone remember such a thing or know of anyone who sells them?

Stiffel makes lamps with the pull-down switch. I used to use one for the pianos, but when we remodeled the house, I put in overhead lighting tracks.

I have this one, from IKEA, but in a nickel finish that I don't see on their site anymore (just white or black). I picked it because it casts a fairly wide beam. Provides good light with LED bulb. (Not a 3-way fixture though.) It puts light where I want it, and the button switch is on the vertical pole. It's inexpensive at $49.

By the way, my Stiffel lamp takes a 3-way mogul lamp bulb, and three additional bulbs. It can make a lot of light, more than I can use.

I have this LED floor lamp from Cocoweb: dimmable, adjustable and light covers a big area

I have a 3 headed monster from IKEA which I like to aim at the walls and the ceiling. To make it brighter I light all 3, and to dim it I keep 1 or 2 of them off. It uses LEDs and never gets hot.

After giving up on the halogen Pharmacy Lamp (with two of the space heaters), I got the Balance Arm Lamp from House of Troy. I think I ordered it from http://PianoSupplies.com, but trying to find it on the site tonight, I came up empty. It says "Push the Next Button" to turn the page, but there is no Next Button. Anywhere.

I believe you can order the same kind of lamp as a freestanding floor lamp. If you close up the piano every night, it saves a bit of work. But, I have stopped doing that; I have the part of the piano that folds back to reveal the music desk and tuning pins, covered with a nice-looking cloth drape. It keeps the dust out and allows the music rack and piano lamp to stay where they are.

Mine takes a fluorescent bulb. It gives a nicer light than you might think. Non-dimmable; it's already just right. Home Depot has the tubes; no problem to find it. When the ballast burned out, House of Troy sent me a new one (apparently it is housed in the transformer). No charge. Black stone base, polished brass lamp parts; very handsome and elegant.
