Hi there,

I wanted to share that I just saw a documentary about the Loretto Chapel staircase. Maybe many here who live in the USA know about it but it was unknown to me.

Many pianists and piano technicians are curious, impressed and know the huge amount of work needed to create a great acoustic piano. In this particular aspect, I can say I was amazed to watch the program about this wooden staircase who was built by a sole carpenter around 1877, without central pole or handrails (they were added later as people freaked out descending it). I can only imagine how complex it must be to build or even start to think about the design of such a thing, with only basic tools at hand.

As one person commented, imagining he was the great carpenter himself : “Yeah, I can build an unsupported wood spiral staircase with this chisel, hammer and handsaw right over there. Just for giggles, I'll give it two spirals. That’ll look nice. I got all the details right here in my head. No problem.".

Very humbling masterwork. You can read more about it on Wikipedia, etc.

Have a great New Year.

Very beautiful.

I'm reminded of a quotation from Gene Roddenberry, in a Star Trek documentary years ago: "No, ancient astronauts didn't build the pyramids - humans built them, because they're clever and they work hard".

My associate helped design a music studio for a music producer. The producer wanted several custom design features to make the building special. He ended up building a free standing spiral staircase like the ones above, but much more modern. He had to submit drawings and engineering specs to the local city for permit approval. It turned out really cool. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of it.
