Hi,

I am getting ready to get my piano for sale. However, I wanted some input on what the value should be if privately sold. It is a single owner upright piano in gloss black purchased around 1996 (iirc) and personally signed by the Walter family.

I've look at the local market and asked a piano store. It is looking like the $2400 - $3500 range. Does that seem about right? I'll be getting it professionally tuned ahead of sale.

Thanks,
Andy

Sounds about it right if in good condition. Black is a good color as well as getting it tuned. Where located?

You might ask the piano technician who tunes it if that seems a reasonable price. Piano techs often know the market and can tell you if your piano is in good shape to sell. Best of Luck.

I think that is a bargain price - as long as the piano has been properly maintained all that time, including regulation and voicing.

Good Luck!

I went to look at a 1997 Walter a few months. I had watched it drop down to $1400 on CL, from (IIRC) $3000. It was beautiful. I really liked it. Looking back I kinda wish I'd bought it... sigh.

It was brown. Not sure if it makes that much difference. The seller said I was the first who'd even called him, let alone come to look.

Anyway, your piano is "worth" a certain amount, assuming you can scare up a buyer. I hope you find one. Best of luck.

I was able to get my 1997 Walter 1520 (in nearly pristine condition!) for $2200 in a private sale about a year ago. It has a cherry finish and the French Provincial styling. I watched it languish on Craigslist for weeks and finally traveled about 100 miles to take it for a spin. The owner told me I was the second person to come look at it, and the first guy had tried several times to lowball him so he had told the guy to get lost. This means that out of the more than 35 million people within a 100 mile radius of that piano(NY metro area,) I was one of only two people willing to seriously consider buying it during the four week period that it was posted. The other person who looked refused to pay $2200.

IMO, Walter makes very nice pianos, just about as nice as you could ever hope for in an upright. Unfortunately, brand name recognition just does not seem to be there for Charles R. Walter among the general public. If it is in good shape, given my anecdotal experience, I'd expect it to sell in a private sale at the low end of that range.

Good luck on your sale! You are about to make someone very happy!

If it had been for sale in my area before I bought my upright, I would have looked. There are CW fans on here. One of the few American made pianos. Good luck with the sale.
