I have been playing for 30-some years and went from owning an old upright to a solid 1920's Hazleton baby grand that I have had for about 20 years. As my 9-year old daughter has progressed in her lessons, I started back to more regular playing. The action on the old grand has left a lot to be desired, and it wasn't worth a rebuild, so the search for a newer, larger grand started earlier this year. After several months of research and a talk with my tech, I visiting two dealers here in Memphis, Circle Music and Lane Music, both owned by Scott Lane. Circle is a Yamaha dealer. I arrived there and was immediately invited to play a new C7, which was very nice and obviously outside my price range. It was delightful to play, but the bass sounded a little out of control. Could have been the room. It was LOUD. I tried out a variety of other grands, including a Steinway, older Yamaha concert grand, a Young Chang and a Yamaha C5. The C5 was about 30 years old and in excellent condition. The only signs of age were slight grooves in the hammers. The action was perfect. The bass response was a little weak to my ears, but just a little. Overall, a very nice sounding piano. I left that store with the C5 as my presumptive choice. Circle Music is a great store, and I was treated very well.

Next stop was Lane Music in Germantown, TN. Scott Lane graciously invited me to play their Shigeru Kawai Concert Grand in the recital hall, even though I had made it clear about the limits of my budget. Now I am not one for superlatives, but this was an astoundingly exquisite piano to play on. I would love to go back there and listen to a really accomplished soloist take it through its paces. A truly magical instrument.

I also played an older Kawai, a new Bosendorfer, and two new Kawai's, a GL-40 and GX-2. The contrast between the two new Kawai's was interesting. I really wanted to prefer the GX-2. It had a beautiful black satin finish and the extra touches found in the Blak series. But in terms of touch and tone, the GL-40 got the better of it, particularly in the bass response, which was controlled, rich and deep. Both actions were great, but this GL definitely had the edge. Also interesting was to compare the GL-40 to the Bosendorfer. I don't know which model it was, but it appeared to be about 6 feet and had a fancy cabinet. The action was delightful, but the sound was too bright to my ears and a little uneven. I preferred the Kawai, regardless of price.

I made a deal on the GL-40 and will be receiving it in the New Year. I think it's going to take both me and my daughter to the next level(s) in our playing.

Congratulations on your new Kawai GL40! I’m sure you and your daughter will be “over the moon” with excitement. Please post pictures when it’s delivered! In fact, you can take pictures and/or video the delivery of the brand new piano because it is a big memorable event.

Wonderful, congratulations!!! I bet that piano sounds amazing!

Also, isn't it neat to play some of those amazing, super top-top tier instruments during the search? Even though we know we would never be able to have one of them in our own homes, I still think it's magical. Also, in a way, ludicrous! whome By which I mean, during my piano search, when I sat down to play a Steinway that cost almost as much as my house, there was an element of the absurd to it for me. But good-absurb, decadent in the way that a really fancy piece of gourmet chocolate can be....

And then there's something about playing those top tier instruments that I think helps us ultimately when we choose an instrument that is within our budget. As with your shopping experience, there were several brands/models you could have considered, but only one that was your clear choice. Having played the best of the best, and all the ones available in the middle range, I think it's easier to know that you're making the right choice. At least, that's how I've come to see it.

Sorry for rambling!!

Be sure to come back and share pics after it's delivered!

It is uplifting to read through this topic about someone who has found a new grand piano, a Kawai GL-40, that seems the perfect fit for both his musical and practical needs. Congratulations! Christmas should be the time of affirmation of love and friendship and the acquisition of a fine, new grand piano at this time reminds us how much the domestic piano can give happiness and spiritual enrichment.

Merry Christmas to all!
Robert.

Actually I have just found some notes I made about the GL series
which I tried recently ,and yes I thought the GL40 had a really nice
tone whereas the GL20 and the GL30 had a brighter tone.
Of course this depends on personal taste .

Congratulations! I hope it brings many years of enjoyment to you and your family. My RX 2 came from Lane. Good experience from both Circle(formerly Memphis Music) and Lane as well. And just to keep it fair, the Steinway store in Memphis Amro Music, is a nice place to shop as well.

The new piano arrived about a week ago. Quite a change from our 100 year-old baby grand! It will take me a while to get used to the action, as I was compensating for inconsistency on the old one. Still, I'm already seeing some improvement in my playing. And our 9-year old has discovered pianissimo! LOL.
