So I was playing on my Yamaha Reface CP, a digital piano that usually has a good sound. But when I was using the sustain pedal, especially for long durations, the sound was awful, distorted and muddy.

After much tinkering, I can conclude that the piano is not broken, the batteries are not almost dead, etc. The problem was the DRIVE setting.

Drive or as you might call it "distortion". This setting usually makes the piano sound "fat" and cool, but with the sustain pedal it means mud. The distortions totally dominate the sound.

So when you use a sustain pedal with the Yamaha Reface CP, make sure to turn drive down to a minimum, zero, the resulting sound is much better!

I guess this also is a fact with other digital pianos with controllable drive, or distortion, when using a sustain pedal?

Hmm, I haven’t noticed that but I’ve been in a noisy studio, you may be right. I will retest with headphones.

Isn‘t this a fundamental property of distortion - it is very subtle if the input level is low (e.g. because only a single note is played) and gets stronger with increasing level (e.g. because many notes are held using a sustain pedal)?
