Just wondering what your wholesale price estimates would be for the following:

Early 1960s Hamburg Steinway B
Full excellent condition ivory
Excellent sound board
Cabinet with some small areas with peeling polyurethane (will obviously need a restoration at some point)
Overall piano plays well but needs a restoration. Original strings / pins / etc.

Your help is very much appreciated.

Andre

Little difficult to give valuation without seeing it, and without any info on condition of action(hammers grooved?silks ok? etc.- and what is regulation like?), strings&pins (rust/spots/corrosion?)...These kind of details might help.

Just looking for a range. Piano plays great. Want to make sure I'm not getting ripped off.

Everything is original. Action looks good. Cabinet needs refinish. Original pins, strings.

How much do they want?

Where do you live? Outside of the Americas, Hamburg isn't a big deal.

Unless you know more about pianos than 95+% of non techs, it's very hard to evaluate a piano's action unless there are obvious problems. You need a tech report to know the real condition of the piano.

Greetings,
There is a way to avoid getting ripped off. It is called insurance, and it is what you are buying when you pay a qualified tech to examine it and give you trustworthy information. That can't be had here, as there a more than a few reasons not to buy the piano that require physically examining it to find. It is difficult to accurately guess at value without tuning it, unless it is a basket/rebuild situation, where the prices are both fairly consistent and low.
If the piano is a good deal, the tech's fee should be of little consequence. Maybe have them tune it, with you and the seller splitting the price, and ask for a non-written opinion, if that is all you need.
Regards,

Mostly agreed. Especially at the price of $27,500. If it were an amazing deal, like $5000, then I’d say buy it regardless smile (Assuming the OP likes playing it.)

That's too bad. I know how that can be.
