New Garittan CFX user, had a few questions:

1 - My DP (Yamaha P515) automatically shut down when inactive. When it turns up again, the VST is not working anymore. Is there a way around this? I use the DP also as an audio interface.
2 - I use the player perspective with headphones (Edward's reflection) - this sounds great, though I would dial down the reverb a bit. When playing through monitors (JBL 305p), it does not sound as good. What preset/perspective would you suggest to use with monitors?

This is a great article about the player perspective and Edward's Reflection:

https://www.garritan.com/blog/abbey-road-cfx-concert-grand-player-perspective/

The ku100 dummy head mics are for binaural purposes so should be best suited for headphone use, not speakers.

A few of us also think the ku100 L & R channels are swapped; Garritan and others disagree. You can search the PW for more info and how you can try swapping the ku100 mics (just run a second instance of the Aria Player, one muting the ambient mics, one muting the close mics. set the close ku100 mics to audience and the km84 mics to performer (or just mute the km84).

Regardless, the binaural effect is not optimal IMO and I'm not sure why. Maybe the pianist playing the samples is between the piano and the dummy head. Maybe because the samples are noisy. Maybe no other mics (km84) should be mixed else destroying the binaural effect.

I much prefer the full>classic>default setting and don't particularly like the other mics. A few people have summarised their settings here. Rach3Master has some nice ambient settings also.

Garritan is dumbass regarding the midi controller. If you start garritan first and then turn on your DP you have to reselect the midi controller in the settings. I think there is similar happening when your DP is shutting down due to inactivity.

Do you know if there's a way to automate that? It's annoying to start fiddle with the computer to be able to start playing.

MIDI to USB cable might have a few downsides but you would need to try

- Some people report that Garritan CFX sounds crackly if not restarted every few hours. There are some apparent memory leaks you could read about here if you like. That crackling happens to me also but not to everyone.

- It is possible the Yamaha USB MIDI direct to your computer will perform better than with a DIN MIDI converter in the middle. Who knows.

Are you talking about something like the Yamaha UX16 Midi (to USB) interface?
I’ve used one of these before without any problems.

Yes, I recommend Midi to USB cable. It also solves this problem in general, i.e. for other VST or DAW. I have switched to midi to USB cable and have had zero problems with that since then.

It should be possible to disable the Auto Power Off function in the instrument's system settings menu. I believe there may also be a "press a key and turn on the power" combination to achieve this and store the setting permanently. Please refer to the owner's manual included with the instrument.

Kind regards,
James

I was thinking of contacting tech support to ask about the crackling. It's really annoying! Is restarting the solution? Thanks

You might also try increasing the buffer size for crackling.

Or in the advanced tab, changing the RAM allocation & Pre-caching. Oddly some people had good luck with very low pre-caching but maybe higher will help you.

You might kill the onboard reverb effects.

On you computer, you might disable networking, set windows power options to "high performance".

There are a lot of Garritan CFX performance posts at PianoWorld that might help.
