How can you do this neatly? Usually I don't have a problem fitting in the changes I want to make because it's just a note or two, but in this Mazurka, (Chopin 41/1, C sharp minor, M 105-118), I'm shifting quite a few notes, there are many accidentals and there is very little room on the score. I tried writing on a blank score but I seem to be incapable of producing legible notes. I suppose I should just try to memorize the section, but I'm not there yet. Any help would be appreciated.

I just write down RH or LH with a square bracket above the group of notes that it pertains to. Or if I want to show off, I use m.d. and m.s. instead  .

Photocopy and then paste each line separately to a new sheet with the room you need for annotations . You can also paste the two staves separately to provide more room between them

I just write down RH or LH with a square bracket above the group of notes that it pertains to. Or if I want to show off, I use m.d. and m.s. instead .  The problem is notes that are embedded in chords so RH/LH gets messy Photocopy and then paste each line separately to a new sheet with the room you need for annotations . You can also paste the two staves separately to provide more room between them
That might work if I enlarge the copy. Right now, there's no room within the chords.

It looks like the only solution is to (over-)'paint' the notes a different color for each hand in that passage...... I'll have to buy some whiteout! With everything digitized, I wonder if it is still available? You can use erasable highlighters to designate the hands. These things are great!

I use eraseable highlighters for certain notes that I need to either play with a different hand, or play louder.

(Note: I haven't yet tried it at the piano.) If you redistribute the notes are you still going to be able to satisfactorily accent the notes that Chopin has so indicated in the score? Isn't this a similar situation to certain sections of the Rachmaninoff C-sharp minor Prelude where the thumbs overlap? Would you re-distribute notes in the Rachmaninoff as well? Regards,

If one has or is recovering from an injury than any distribution of notes can be justified for that reason.
But if that's not the case, then, in general, if a composer was an excellent pianist one should consider the strong possibility that they wrote a particular note distribution to achieve a certain musical effect. So before one redistributes the notes for ease of execution one should weight that against achieving that musical effect.

Besides writing on the sheet music, I'd use sticky notes. I can write as much info on them without marking up the original.
