Hi, guys!

Click here to see your Christmas card!

The piano playing starts at around 2:00. Here's a link to the Doug McKenzie arrangement I used for the rubato first chorus:

Merry Christmas,

Here's a slightly OT question:

Why, in North America, do we traditionally wish each other "Merry Christmas," but never "Merry Easter," or "Merry Thanksgiving," nor do we say "Merry Fourth of July" nor "Merry Canada Day"? Whereas in Great Britain, the wish is generally "Happy Christmas," a greeting rarely, if ever heard in North America, unless it is from a transplanted person from Great Britain.

An Irishman explained it to me today - again - as he did last year. (Sibylle?)

I'm not aware that British people say "Happy" instead of "Merry", though as a self-confessed Scrooge-admirer and curmudgeon, I rarely (if ever) bestow those words of greeting on anyone, whatever the time of the year.

In fact, I've just bought a packet of cheap Christmas cards (British-made and designed), and the greeting inside each of them is......"Merry Christmas" smirk .

Al, I look forward to this every year. Love the arrangement and photos. You inspire me to do something a little similar. Love your Christmas spirit!

Thank you!

I've heard and seen both "happy" and "merry" Christmas around here. Other than, of course, the Irish version, Nollaig Shona wink

I much prefer the neutral "Happy Holidays" because let's face it, we no longer live in a world where everyone or nearly everyone is a Christian. How some people manage to get offended by that, I'll never know; where I'm from it's polite not to make an assumption (where I'm from being Germany). I'm a pagan myself, and while I'm not one to get offended by a well-meaning "merry Christmas", I do appreciate when people make an effort to be more inclusive.

I think the difference is that "merry" is for the joyous celebration of Christmas, whereas we hope that the coming year brings happiness. It's not just about the celebration part.

Well, the problem is that not everyone gets holidays during Christmas/NY, especially if they work in healthcare or the emergency services etc. (In fact, this is the busiest and most stressful time for them.)

I don't, so as a confirmed atheist, I prefer people to wish me a "Merry" or Happy Christmas, rather than 'Happy Holidays' (which I believe is American and not used in the UK - I've never heard anyone say it) even though of course, as a Scrooge acolyte, I won't be either happy or merry. whistle

My neighbour's rather staunch view notwithstanding, as far back as 1843 Dickens (A Christmas Carol) wrote:

"A merry Christmas, uncle! God save you!" cried a cheerful voice. It was the voice of Scrooge's nephew, who came upon him so quickly that this was the first intimation he had of his approach.
"Bah!" said Scrooge. "Humbug!"
He had so heated himself with rapid walking in the fog and frost, this nephew of Scrooge's, that he was all in a glow; his face was ruddy and handsome; his eyes sparkled, and his breath smoked again.
"Christmas a humbug, uncle!" said Scrooge's nephew. "You don't mean that, I am sure?"
"I do," said Scrooge. "Merry Christmas! What right have you to be merry? What reason have you to be merry? You're poor enough."
"Come, then," returned the nephew gaily. "What right have you to be dismal? What reason have you to be morose? You're rich enough."
[…] "I am sorry, with all my heart, to find you so resolute. We have never had any quarrel to which I have been a party. But I have made the trial in homage to Christmas, and I'll keep my Christmas humour to the last. So A Merry Christmas, uncle!"

So, it may indeed be "merry" in all of the English-speaking world.

Regards,

BruceD

P.S.

(Sorry, I can't help it!)

A neighbour (English) just dropped by and wished me a "Happy Christmas!"

Cheers!
