My technician just tuned my eight year old Kawai K5 and wrote in a report:

'Tone is good. Reshaping may be needed in the near future if the tone becomes too bright. Reshaping will reduce the grooves and soften the tone.'

Is this a thing? Any comments/suggestions welcome.

Sounds routine to me to soften the tone when the hammers become too bright.

In addition to tuning, voicing and regulation are the other typical maintenance categories. Reshaping the hammers is part of voicing maintenance. With use, the felts both wear and compress, forming the grooves. A light filing will remove the grooves, allowing for fresh contact with the strings. It also maintains the "egg" shape of the hammers to have the best tone.

After 8 years, that is easily to be expected as are some other maintenance needs.

If voicing maintenance like that is not done, not only does the tone suffer, but even more work is needed to correct down the road.

Round hammers make a round tone.

Unusual to do anything to the shanks I would have thought, though. Who has suggested that?
