I’m preparing for the arrival of my new piano and would like to ask what hygrometer and humidifier people are using. I’m in Toronto, Canada and we are brutally dry here in the winter. I was advised to get a hygrometer and a humidifier with no white dust. Another issue is that my home has an open concept staircase so no room can be closed off (except bedrooms and washrooms); all floors are open to every other floor. That kind of sucks for trying to humidify my piano room.

The white dust is caused by ultrasonic humidifiers, so if you get an evaporative style you won't have dust. Instead of just a hygrometer, I would suggest using a programmable controller, this is the one I use. It will allow you to set a desired humidity range and the controller will turn the humidifier off and on to maintain that range. They are nice because the humidity probe is on a fairly long cable, so I suspend mine under my soundboard. My controller can also control a dehumidifer, not sure if you have humid weather where you are. The controller is nice because you can plug both the humidifier and dehumidifier into it, which is useful in areas where you have seasons that flip from requiring humidification and dehumidification from one day to the next.
As far as the humidifier itself, I have this one. It would not be nearly big enough for your house, so you'd need something larger. If you have forced air heat you might consider a central whole house humidifier installed on your furnace.

Thanks for the ideas. I’ll remember to stay away from the ultrasonic humidifiers.

I have 3 digital hygrometers. Two of them work better in lower temperatures (with lower humidity because of indoor heating ),and 2 of them work better in higher temperatures(with higher humidity
readings)The more successful one of these 3 is the cheap " la Croix ".There is also an analog hygrometer inside my piano which also helps.
We now have a new furnace with a hygrometer that is( in higher outdoor temperatures )about 5% out with the digital hygrometers ? So it all just gives an idea of what the humidty actually is.
Living in Vancouver we mostly use the dehumidifier. The hygrometer on the dehumidifier agrees basically with the digital ones.Recently we had a real cold spell in Vancouver so the humidity went
into the low 40's. We used our ultrasonic humidifier which makes no noise.Perhaps it is because we
seldom use the humidifier here ,but we never experience any white powder ?
