Hello All,
After much back and forth between my local Yamaha dealer (NU1X) or the CA98 at my local (one hour drive away) Kawai dealer, I negotiated the best price with Kawai. $4000 includes tax plus a delivery fee of $300-$350 (third party that the music store uses).
This negotiation also includes them giving me a trade allowance on my old Yamaha acoustic upright of $1000, but they aren’t charging me to remove it of course since I am paying a delivery fee.
My other choice is to wait for the NV5 instead. I have heard conflicting news, but supposedly this local dealer spoke with their Kawai rep and has been advised that the discounted street price of the NV5 will be $8295 and it won’t be available in the US for 5 months.
So what I proposed to this local Kawai dealer, is let me know what he can do if I buy the CA98 now and then have an option to trade it towards the NV5 later, I advised that since they are selling me the CA98 at 40% below MSRP, I would like to have the NV5 pre-negotiated at 40% below MSRP. However, I just realized a calculation error on my part since the discounted price I am getting the CA98 for includes $1000 for my upright as part of the 40% MSRP. So technically I would negotiate the NV5 price at 30% below MSRP.
I think this is getting too complicated and the NV5 may end up being out of my price range. Any thoughts?
I am hoping MacMacMac will chime in here as he seems to be a shrewd negotiator.
Thanks folks!

Well I am not Mac and he will opine I'm sure. Are you writing a check for $4000 plus tax and delivery or for $3000 plus tax and deliver? If it is for $3000+ that is a great deal. But for my opinion: The dealer is trying to get you to buy the CA98 now/today as you may not come back for the NV5. That price for the NV5 is way out of line. IMHO, from what we have seen, it will sell for around $6000. The NU1x can be purchased where I live for less than $4500 plus tax. Also take trade-up deal with a grain of salt. In my experience, they only benefit the dealer.

Others have paid $4000 for the CA98 with delivery included and no trade in. https://forum.pianoworld.com/ubbthre...-prices-paid-new-thread.html#Post2785758Does your $4000 include the trade? Or is it $3000 with the trade? As for buying the CA98 and trading it toward an NV5 later ... don't. These are sucker deals. As for this ... "... supposedly this local dealer spoke with their Kawai rep and has been advised that the discounted street price of the NV5 will be $8295 ..." That cannot be relied upon. Ignore it.

Thanks Mac and Tom. Actually the trade deal was my idea not theirs. Also, unfortunately the $4000 plus delivery includes them giving me $1000 for my piano. So essentially the price on the CA98 without the trade is $5000 which includes tax plus delivery of $300-$350
Are you guys suggesting I pass on their offer?
My gut tells me to wait and see what the NV5 sells for and make a deal then.
Thank you!

What is the value of your Yamaha upright and can you sell it yourself instead of trading it in? Selling it yourself may be a hassle but would probably put you in a better position to negotiate a lower price. From the numbers you provided, it looks like the dealer is more or less taking your old piano off of your hands but are not really giving you $1000 for it. If you sell it yourself and put that money in your pocket, you should be able to walk in and buy that CA98 for $4k + delivery.
Btw, is the CA97 Rosewood, Satin or Polished Ebony? Theres a significant price difference between the R and PE.

$5k plus a delivery fee in the US does not sound like a screaming deal to me, even for the PE version.
I would recommend calling other dealers (even if not in the same city or state) and seeing what they'll offer you (it would be without the trade-in of course). As Mac indicated, others in the US have purchased for closer to $4k.
What is the Yamaha upright you're offering for trade-in? Yamahas really retain their value, so you may be able to get more if you put it up on Pianomart or your local CL.

Hello djvu10, My upright is an old p202. I don’t know how old it is, can’t find the serial #. I can tell you that I’ve had it for 20 years. The color is the satin black.
Hi Gombessa, Not sure if it will sell in this are on CL, lots of pianos on there. Haven’t checked piano mart.
I think I am going to sit tight until the NV5 comes out. If the local Kawai dealer isn’t competition his pricing, maybe it would be worth it to pay shipping from a neighboring dealer, where’re that may be.
Thanks everyone!

Two things. 1. Don't take this deal. It stinks. 2. I would not get a price from a dealer. I would get a price from someone I trust. Me. The tag on the merchandise is the dealer's offer. But it means nothing to me. Instead ... I make the offer. The dealer might accept, or he might not. Thanks Mac and Tom. Actually the trade deal was my idea not theirs. Also, unfortunately the $4000 plus delivery includes them giving me $1000 for my piano. So essentially the price on the CA98 without the trade is $5000 which includes tax plus delivery of $300-$350

My gut tells me to wait and see what the NV5 sells for and make a deal then. Also ... I wonder whether your terminology influences your thinking. You said you might "make a deal" for an NV5 in the future. That's bad-think. Instead, I'll repeat my earlier notion. Make an offer ... not a deal.

Very well put Mac. I am not going to take this offer and am going to wait until the NV5 comes out. If that is priced out of my range even with sharp negotiating, then I will reconsider the CA98.
I am wondering if it makes sense to find out where the next nearest Kawai dealer is to me and make an offer of $3k with my trade-in or $4k without. Just not sure how far away it would be and if shipping fees would be ludicrous.
At this point, I kind of feel like calling it quits altogether and just having my upright tuned.

That sounds like the best option, unless you need to be able to practise with headphones.

Remember that a dealer will never give you that price for a trade-in, since they're taking a risks on condition, prep, showroom space, sales/service etc.
But if you were to try to offer your P202 as a private sale, you could compete with that price, rather than then $1000 trade-in offer.
