+1. Teaching well really is a skill.

An impatient teacher is just another way of saying ex-teacher, at least for me.

I have spent a LOT of time in studio waiting rooms, waiting for my music teachers. I was always amazed at the amount of patience these folks had. I can hardly see how drum teachers make it through the day without taking a bullet.

Aren’t most drum teachers deaf? smile That’s gotta help. I worked with ex-military guy who wore two hearing aids. During contentious meetings, he’d turn his hearing aids off and a look of bliss would spread across his face.

Alan, you may well have a teacher with poor patience skills--time would tell--but I keep going back to the thought that you're drawing a line based on this single point.

This thread includes a lot of very good comments and suggestions. I can only add, from my own experience as an older adult intermediate level pianist, that finding the right teacher makes all the difference in the world and is well worth the effort, time and expense. Best of luck!

From my experience, it takes different people skills to successfully teach adults. Adults want more control over the chosen repertoire, teaching methods, and exactly how much time the adult will devote to practice.

I am awed by the amount of patience my teacher has, and I'm glad to see this credit given. It can't be easy!

Had a new lesson with a different teacher and the experience was night from day. Total calm and patience, just good instruction and didn’t try to butter me up and say that’s fantastic then kick me down. I’m not a fantastic player, not at my level.
This teacher is charging me way below her actual rate because I first inquired two years ago and the became wary of Skype. If she continues to be this good Im going to double her pay which is a lot of money in her country.
Thank-you everyone for your wisdom and excellent guidance.
