I want to buy an expressive awesome upright piano, so I'm thinking of the yamaha u3 because of the longer strings. What would you guys personally recommend?

If you can afford the YUS 5 it is wonderful. I had bought the U1 and did not care for the sound. I had been taking for only 1 year, but played as a child. Still don't play well but its fun. I turned in the U1 within 30 days and bought the YUS 5. I like better bass sound with the 52" piano. My tuner says the U1 and U3 are really work horses, if your buying used make sure to have it checked out. I bought a new piano, but this is my lifetime one. Actually the only one I had since childhood. After finishing my PhD at 54, it was a gift to myself for my lifetime piano hobby I started after school. 5 years later, never regretted the purchase.

Can you tell us your approximate budget? Without knowing that it's hard to make recommendations. What is your current piano? Do you definitely want a new piano or would you consider used? Buying used is much trickier but pianos depreciate a lot the first few years so one can sometimes get "more piano" for the same price by buying a piano that's a few years old. Is a grand a possibility or are you limited to a vertical by space of budget? Since you are very advanced but may not have that much experience with many different pianos, you should try as many pianos as possible and then mostly decide for yourself. In your price range there will always be several or even many choices so personal preference on touch and tone will be the biggest factor in your choice. Try not to rush into anything. Especially if you want to buy a new piano you can always buy the next example of Piano X that comes to the dealer if you hesitate and someone else buys it. You should definitely read most of the articles in the Piano Buyer: https://www.pianobuyer.com/.If you tell us your location, some posters will probably able to suggest some dealers to consider.

I would say at most maybe $6000. I had a baby grand but it's very old and now with new limited space I want to get a good acoustic upright piano - used or new.

Listen to the wise one, this (and the rest of it) is +1 advice. A piano you couldn't afford new might suddenly be in your price range because it's 3-5 years old, and still in excellent condition. Obviously, you need to check! I'm buying the first - and hopefully last - new piano in my life right now, but I'm doing this only because there are no used pianos of the quality I'm looking for on sale in the area I'm moving to right now. Good luck, and let us know what you end up buying! We require pictures

A few hours ago my brand new U1 arrived in my flat in Amsterdam. I just love the sound and the intimacy it conjures, because it's stuck in a relatively small room.
The U3 is much larger and your budget if $6000 won't cover for that, unless you're going for a used one and still...

My thinking is that with a budget of $6000.00 and your search for "an expressive awesome upright" along with some careful, patient shopping you would do better looking at used pianos rather than new ones. $6000.00, as you probably know, may not fulfill the criteria of both "expressive" and "awesome."
If used is your ultimate goal, make sure you have it checked out by a qualified technician before purchasing.
Best of luck in your hunt.

If you can get a Yamaha YSU118 used, that a very good piano. In the Yamaha line it is one of their model which is the most expressive and not as bright and as the other models. They are quite expensive brand new.

Osco Depending on the piano a U3 is certainly better than a U1 in that it has longer strings etc. A Kawai K500 is also a consideration. You are an excellent pianist, so you Need to check very carefully (a technician for a used piano )As DSFRN has suggested a YUS5 would be great ! Of course if you could find a good used European piano with enhanced repetition action that would be great.Buy as new as possible. There are sections in Piano Buyer which praise the repeatition action of the new Ed Seiler piano which although not made in Europe is a wonderful facsimile of that one.
