I believe there was a thread earlier about the Cliburn 2020 competition, but as far down as I scroll I can't find it. So, friends, less than two months to submission deadline. What are we all programming for our auditions and performance rounds? What's the consensus on the weird concerto repertoire list? I think it would be good to have a thread that keeps us apprised of deadlines etc., but also lets us know our competitors and plan accordingly so we can beat them. I am truly sad that Coaster won't be there in 2020. But, OMG, the talent we've seen at recent Boston and WIPAC competitions indicates that this Cliburn will be the hardest of all to get in to. As to repertoire, I think we should share, right? So let's tell each other what rep we're planning for our auditions. Then we can move on to "next steps". Love, SiFi https://www.cliburn.org/application-rules/

About repertoire: Not sure yet, except that it'll include brand new stuff for me. For too long I was mostly re-working old stuff. It started reminding me of a thing in Harold Schonberg's book (The Great Pianists) where a former child prodigy went to play for some famous pianist (granting that English wasn't this guy's first language, also that I wasn't a prodigy), and after he hears the old prodigy play, he says, "How old are you still?" BTW, I don't have any problem with the list of concerti.

I won't join this time.
I was in Paris competition this March and saw many talented players.
I would expect Sebastian Amenabar and William Galton be in Cliburn next year.
Good luck to you all.

From the rules: Applications will include uploads of: 1. 15-20 minute video performance 2. ... Not that I plan to apply, but I am asking just for curiosity: Is it required that the upload must be a single video file 15-20 minutes in length (i.e., one or more pieces played one after another and recorded in one session, like it would be in a concert situation), or is it possible to upload multiple video files recorded in separate sessions/places/dates?

I'm sure it's the latter.

I thought there'd be more of us entering. I had been planning to enter, but there's another competition I want to do in April and it would be difficult to do both. I still haven't ruled out the Cliburn Amateur though.

I just had a thought. The other competition is annual, so I might try the Cliburn Amateur next year and do the other one in 2021. I don't feel confident that I'd be accepted for either, but trying is probably half the fun.

Hi, johnstaf! I highly recommend the Cliburn -- I was accepted in 2007, and I found the support staff to be thoroughly professional and very supportive of the participants at all stages of the competition. I have no intention of applying again -- the bar has simply been raised too high for me, and in any event I no longer have the "fire in my belly" to overachieve -- but rest assured that the experience should be a distinctly positive one for you. Good luck!
