How do you define "professional classical pianist?"

She earns money playing classical piano to audiences. What other definition is there???

Not quite what I had in mind ha but that's a good looking Yamaha.

No sure I'd care to watch the performance, I think shirtless is quite enough. But since I am all for gender equality in everything, I cannot complain...female pianists have played in underwear as well smile

Lola made it to the cover of the Issue No. 111 of Pianist Magazine! 🎆 🙌 The article is, "Lola Astanova: Force of Nature." And it's even a cover that could go in a supermarket aisle 😜 💄

Well, about time! 😄

She's somewhat overdressed for a magazine on the bottom shelf of a supermarket aisle.

My local supermarket has women's magazines (fashion, 'celebrity' etc) with covers featuring......women in skimpy bikinis, or less. (The men's magazines of course have topless men with steroid-enhanced muscles on their covers).

I think we need to consider clothing for those of us who never play for audiences. For a classy look, I suggest pajamas from Derek Rose. These will work well for all of the night owl pianists in the group. Here is an example:

I can’t quite bring myself to buy these but I’m close, lol. This way, if there is ever a fire in my building, god forbid, I’ll cut a fine figure standing on the sidewalk.

I prefer the pajamas Lola is wearing on her cover (but on her, not on me). Maybe I should get that pair of silk PJs for my wife.

It also says anyone can sight-read!

Of course that's true, but I'd still like to read the article.

My piano is in our bedroom. It is November and we sleep with an open window, so when I play in the middle of the night, I look more like this: (with a happy face though)

Playing the piano is learning to create, playfully and deeply seriously, our own music in the world.

LOL. We live on the top floor. We get all of the heat from the rest of the building. Even with some windows open, we can’t get the temperature down much. It’s ok, the opposite scenario is more difficult to live with. Thankfully, it is cooler in the bedroom and the piano is in the living room, where it is warmer. I don’t play in the wee hours, as even key noise would probably disturb my wife.

I think men of a certain age have to show less skin, not more, as we are unlikely to have the physique of the beefcake guy shown above.

I find the picture of Lola to be heavily Photoshopped, or heavy Photoshop on top of heavy makeup. There is so much trickery in photography these days, not that there wasn’t in the old darkroom days.

Until very recently, the posting of homoerotic images was the only thing I still missed on this forum.

We have had pictures of Lola before. Quite homoerotic if you ask me, even though she is not really my type.

A quote from someone else,

""Thank God she didn't make it to the cover of International Piano.""

NO!! That would NEVER do! A woman pianist in a red dress!!

Now that WOULD be sooooo upsetting for us delicate, easily offended souls, would it not? Ye Gods, WHATEVER next?

I might have an attack of the vapours and need my smelling salts and a strong sweet cup of tea to recover my senses.

Of course, "International Piano" is above such plebian art and style vacuum!

Did you buy this edition, I did (I just LOVE the piano in this one!)

Do you have this edition? I have.

Good to be broad-minded, isn't it????

I have all the IP editions for more than 10 years. I can't tell if your post is serious or not. Just in case it is, there are obvious differences between the photos of Wang and Garrison vs. Astanova. I doubt Astanova will ever make a cover of IP even in modest attire because the covers feature important pianists.

Oh yes, I see what you mean. How silly of me. I had mistaken the bar code on the Yuja Wang issue....

I have all the IP editions for more than 10 years. I can't tell if your post is serious or not. Just in case it is, there are obvious differences between the photos of Wang and Garrison vs. Astanova.

The obvious difference to me is that Astanova is seated at her bench in a way that suggests she might have either just finished playing piano or about to play the piano.

[Linked Image]

While Wang is not in a pose remotely related to piano.

[Linked Image]

And Garritson is not in a pose which is very practical for piano (or for any other activity for that matter).

[Linked Image]

Quote

Not going to argue doubts so I will mostly skip this, except to point out that for an "important pianist," it is indeed ironic that Lindsay Garritson has no Wikipedia page - something Astanova has had for a long time.
