Good morning everyone. I am trying to buy a high-quality recorder for my son for the piano. I don't necessarily care that it has amazing software, because he won't be doing anything to it. I just need a very high-quality recording so he can hear himself. Any suggestions of the best one? We already bought him an iPad Pro but he rejected that. Which is a good thing because it was a fortune. What he really wanted for his 18th birthday was a Steinway. But clearly that's out of the question. Thank you

As an addition, if there is a video recorder that anyone knows of with amazing audio oh, that would be even better. Please provide recommendations for both. Thanks again

I haven't got one but I understand the Zoom H5 recorder would be ideal. They do other less costly Zoom models so worth having a look what is available:

He rejected an iPad pro and wants a Steinway.

So. What I would do is buy him a cheap, plastic recorder from a second hand store. You know, the one that has holes and is blown into.

Tascam DR-100 mk3 for audio recording, the built in mics are good, and also gives you the option to upgrade to better mics in the future. Modern smart phone video cameras are good enough, perhaps invest in a tripod for the phone so he can get a good angle. Merge the separately recorded video and audio in iMovie or some free video editing software in windows.

For audio/visual combined, check out Zoom H8n

IMO for a very high quality audio, audio and video should be recorded by two devices. So that the audio recorder can be positioned at the right point to capture a decent sound.

Secondly, garbage in means garbage out regardless of the quality of the recorder. Therefore the piano must be a good one and it should be very well tuned and voiced.

For very high quality results I suggest using a pair of small diaphragm condenser mics with omni capsules arranged in A-B setup for classical music.
For jazz, pop etc. cardiod mics close to strings might be preferred.

I use a pocket camera for the video along with a microphone/audio interface combo, but I want to get the Zoom Q2N-4K recorder so I won't be tethered to the computer. Does audio and video.

With portable devices like Zoom etc. audio quality is acceptable. But it is not high quality and definetely not very high quality. Also with combined video/audio devices, audio quality is compromised because the mics are not positoned at the best place.
