Replacing dampers on a 1927 Kurtzmann upright. Bass dampers are about 5/16" wide and 2" long. Standard bass damper sets come 3/8" wide and 1-3/4" long. Will it make any difference if I use 1-3/4" dampers instead of 2" ones? I know I'll have to trim the width.

Also, any preference between pre-cut dampers and those you cut yourself? The main difference I see on the pre-cut ones is they have that extra square of felt on the back of the damper to mount onto the wood. Do people typically use a piece of action felt to construct that square when they cut their own dampers?

Thanks for any tips.

-Emery

The strips used for cutting yourself come in either un-backed or backed.

It may not be necessary to trim the strips to match the width of the damper blocks if there is clearance.
However, if the felt is wider, so is the angle of the wedges - that may give you a problem on some notes especially where you use the tri-chord wedges.
The shorter length only matters if they dont damp efficitntly.

Thanks Gene. What if the angle of the wedges is too wide as you say? Are there places to buy tri-chord dampers in various widths? My quick perusal shows they're all the same width.

Buy what you can get and make it work. Chances are, that is what the manufacturer did.

I haven’t installed a precut set for a very long time. When I install new damper felt it’s from my stock supply and I always have a good variety of sizes.
Here’s one example of too wide:
For the trichord wedges sometimes I have difficulty with the wrong size such that the edges of the wedges tend to contact the outside strings of the trichords and don’t do so well on the middle string. If I want to make it fit it’s a combination of squeezing the felt to make it longer and thinner. Then I need to trim the excess that protruded below the strings. But then what happens is the damper block may set at a different height than it’s neighbors when regulated.

Schaff Piano Supply sells Lareaux damper felts in quite narrow strip. It is a very fine quality felt.

Installing dampers after the fact (having hammers and shanks in the way) is significantly harder than when new in factory. You must be equipped to handle problems as they arise (unexpectedly).
