I may or may not have ordered my dream piano (even if it's their smallest model) just now.

Some of you know that I've been working on recovering some of my lost skills (which were never great to begin with) on a fairly cheap, but decent Laniem for the past year. The thing is that I'm moving to Croatia at the end of the year and it would be waaaaay more expensive to bring the piano, than it is to sell it off here and buy a new one there.

So I checked the used piano market in my new hometown. Lots of "August Förster"s there, but they're all the copycat brand from what was then Czechoslovakia in the mid 20th century. And I thought, why am I thinking of buying another compromise? I've been saving up for a while. I've been in love with Förster uprights for 25 years, since I first touched one. I don't have all the money saved just yet, but...

You know what it's like when you talk yourself into doing something slightly reckless grin

Now please tell me very rationally why this is a BAD IDEA and I should just see reason and stop spending more money than I can afford. Go!

If you want it and can afford it you should buy it.

While used piano's are a better deal, there is something to say about being the first owner.

Yes, instead of having a serious conversation with your accountant, you immediately go to PW where everybody will cheer you and tell you to go ahead and do it!

So go ahead Sibylle, and buy the piano of your dreams! 🎈 🧁 🎈

Only you can answer if ‘more money than I can afford’ is completely accurate or not.
If it is just at the edge of affordability, you should buy it: you love playing and the piano of your dreams is highly motivating and rewarding.

If you truly can’t afford it, delay gratification. If you are buying new, new will always be around.

You're all so right, haha, me not asking my sensible non-musical friends (Animisha, I believe if I had an accountant, they'd have handed in their notice by now ha ) but a bunch of piano nutters like myself.

And yes, I just sent the email to confirm my order grin *happydance*

Dogperson, I hear you, and I "should" have probably saved for another year or so first. But this gratification has been delayed for a long time already, and I honestly think I might lose more money if I buy another cheap piano now that I'll then sell at a loss, and Förster pianos are getting more expensive every year too! At least, that's what I'm telling myself smile

No, it's for me! Bit of a long story, to do with Ireland becoming less and less affordable plus me developing asthma and I'm already learning Croatian and I'm in love with the people there, they're fantastic. I'm a freelancer and can work anywhere I have an internet connection. There's more to it, of course, but in short, I'm deliriously happy, and the piano is the icing on this very indulgent life-cake I'm creating!

I'm moving to the outskirts of Rijeka, in Istria smile

There are, essentially, two piano brands labelled August Förster; there's the highly respected brand made in Germany and, as this quote below explains, a piano of much lesser quality once made in the Czech Republic. There may have been a family connection, but among those who know the Förster brand, the Czech Försters don't compare with the German Förster; the German piano being far superior.

I played one of this Czech Försters, and, for me, it just didn't check out! The one thing that I really remember about this not-so-memorable piano was that the black keys were extremely narrow.

Up to year 2000, pianos with August Förster logo were also produced in Czech Republic Petrof’s factory, but except the name they have nothing in common with pianos from Löbau – German factory. They have completely different tone, quality, and lower prices.

Regards,

Thanks, guys! Pictures will definitely follow.

The piano trader I'm buying it from phoned the August Förster manufacture in Löbau, and they said the piano will be finished by the end of the year. That's the great thing about buying a new August Förster, they actually build your piano when they get the order, right there in Germany. So I'll spend the next weeks thinking of how my piano is being "born", while I organise and pack and get ready.

When I arrive, I'll be staying in a guest house for a few days, and then on the 2nd of January, I'll move into the house I'm renting (signed the lease today!). If all goes well, the piano will be delivered the week after smile

P.S. And while I attempt to sound all rational and organised, I'm actually nearly passed out with bliss and wild joy and cannot BELIEVE I'm actually, finally going to own an August Förster!! I can't wait and am counting the days and hours! 3hearts heart 3hearts heart
