Now that I've purchased a Yamaha p515 I'm wondering what to do about a really old keyboard I have that has built in sounds, rhythms etc. It's an old Yamaha 61 key psr-300. I wouldn't sell it to anyone although it does work great and also via MIDI - but obviously it's an ancient electronic key action. But I'm sure it might but fun for young kids in schools, shelters etc. Has anyone successfully donated an old keyboard somewhere that it gets good use?

Old-age home ?

Hospital recreation room ?

Old soldiers' residence ?

The thing about the PSR-3xx series, is that if you know how to play, they're decent, touch-sensitive instruments. I don't know if -- in those environments -- it would be better sitting on a table (very stable!), or on a stand (not very stable).

In Seattle, try phoning the Salvation Army, and ask them. They might say:

. . . "Give it to us, we'll sell it!"

which is another way to solve your problem.

And good luck with the P-515!

Don't know if this is true of electronic keyboards, but very often acoustical pianos donated to the Salvation Army end up in dumpsters. They can't sell them even for $100.

It's hard to shed an acoustic. Every charity said no to me ... except for one. But they're local to south Florida, not of any use to you in Washington.
But keyboards are easy to give away.
Put it on Craigs List. Everybody likes freebies.

I gave an old 61 key casio to local goodwill, they were happy to get it. If you live on a street with lots of traffic you could put it on the curb on a nice day. Around here, things are gone in 30 minutes if I do that.

When my parents passed away we donated the furniture to the Salvation Army. The only piece they wouldn't take was the acoustic piano. We ended up selling for a couple hundred $ to a family that wanted their kids to start piano. To move the piano to my house would of been to expensive for the distance plus I already have a piano. Hope the family is getting use out of the piano and who knows maybe they are on PW lurking right now...........

All these years playing and I still consider myself a novice.

Event Craigs list can be tough. I monitored the free pianos in our area for awhile while trying to figure out what to do with our old spinet. The same pianos were listed for over a month. In the end the spinet went out the back door of the basement in pieces. I took the harp to the salvage yard along with a small box of scrap copper from a plumbing project. The copper got me around $60, the piano harp, with strings attached, about $6, the joy of taking a sledge hammer to it, priceless. smile
