Are there any benefits at all in upgrading my MP11 to an MP11SE?

I may sell my mint condition 4 year old MP11 and upgrade if it’s worth it?

Also... I’m trying to create a 3 layered sound for a song I’m playing in my band
Wasn’t sure if I could have 1 bright sounding piano sound layered with 1 string sound and another string sound added but an octave lower to make a 3 layered patch? Is this possible?

It depends from the difference you should pay for the upgrade. AFAIK, the MP11SE has just 2 more piano samples, compared with the previous MP11: the SK-EX and the SK-5. To me the SK-EX has a much more realistic timbre compared to the EX sound, but it's less bright and it sounds a little more compressed, so it could benefit from an heavy touch curve for an even more realistic feeling for solo playing.
Personally I have not tried the SK-5, but from youtube videos it sounds to me like a mellower sound, compared with the SK-EX.

When I looked at MP11SE my choice became MP7SE, since so much of orchestral stuff were removed. I just love choirs among other things.

Look closely at manual and Sound List that you don't miss anything. They focus so much on the new keys it seems to me.

Was it a Shiguri piano addition, don't remember if that is worth it.

If it's a couple hundred dollars, why not? You get a brand new DP and a new flagship sound. Plus I think the new optical pedal unit alone is worth that smile

If you're taking a 40% haircut though, then maybe not, it's really the same instrument by and large.

But where the numbers cross and make sense for you is a personal choice.

In my opinion, the improved action and pedals are better reasons to upgrade than the extra piano sounds. It will probably be down to how much the upgrade with end up costing you.

I only paid $1999 plus CA sales tax for my MP11se; if I had to pay the $2799 asking price... probably not!

I have a Tyros 5 and half a dozen vintage synths to use for other sounds so I use the MP11se mostly for piano & ep sounds.

As far as layering 3 different internal sounds, I think one would have to be from the piano group, one from the ep group and one from the sub group. I believe one could be from an external source.

I hope that helps a little!

IIRC, the action is unchanged between the MP11 and MP11SE (both are Grand Feel 1).

If it were I, I'd keep the MP11 unless you have real trouble with the MP11 pedals.

I have an MP11SE - and love it - but I tend not to use the SK patches and don't find them alone worth an upgrade. I don't mean to disparage them, merely describing my own usage.

I love the action - and it's identical.

cheers

This post summarises the changes between the original MP11/MP7 and updated MP11SE/MP7SE.

If I already owned an MP11 and was happy with the instrument, I don't believe I would upgrade to the MP11SE. However, the new features/improvements are appealing to you, it's certainly worth considering.

Regarding the sound layering query, the MP11/MP11SE divides internal sounds into three sections: Piano, E.Piano, and Sub. If all three sections are turned on, three voices (e.g. Concert Grand, Classic E.P, Strings) can be played simultaneously, however it's not possible to layer multiple sounds in the same section (e.g. Concert Grand 1 with Concert Grand 2).

Kind regards,
James
