I really like your last recording! The comments in youtube descriptions are helpful too as always. I think, you are on the right path with it musically and I understand so well "not getting it" part with Bach. When learning as a child, Bach was always one of my favorites and (I thought) was letting me showcase my strongest skills. Now, I'm having hard time with it for exact same reason as you and I wonder now if ever gave it any thought at all as a kid.

And how I love Schumann now and I didn't get at all before. It's like having entirely different set of ears (or new head). I enjoyed your Schumann recordings too! Thank you for keeping up and sharing your progress! Very inspirational!

Edit: I also wanted to comment on quality of your recordings. At some point you changed something and quality became noticeably better. Last few videos are pleasure to listen to from this standpoint as well as your performance.

Thank you so much! I am really happy that you are enjoying my recordings and even happier that you find my progress inspirational! Learning piano is an amazing journey and I intend to keep going for the rest of my life. I hope you are enjoying your journey as well!

About Bach, one thing that I think is particularly hard with his music is the fact that he didn't write for the modern piano. Even so, his "keyboard" music really sounds great on the piano, and the fact that there are so many possible interpretations, as there are no original dynamic and articulation markings on the sheet music, makes it more interesting. But, after we have a bit more musical maturity we start facing that issue of how to interpret his music, and we can see how much musical depth there is in even some of his simpler pieces.

About Schumann, yeah, I also didn't like his work very much. It was actually his Album for the Young (Op. 68) that made me really like his music. That set is supposed to contain music for children, but there are a lot of amazing miniatures there, and the album really showcases Schumann's style. I began to listen to more of his works after I digested Op. 68, and now he ranks as one of my favorite composers. I am still going to learn from his Op. 68 for quite some time, and then I will probably start learning his Op. 15, Kinderszenen.

Regarding the quality of my recordings, here is what happened. In the beginning, I did most of them in my digital piano, a Roland FP-30, because my acoustic was out of tune. Once I got it tuned, in April, all recordings were done in my upright piano, using a pair of condenser microphones. About two months ago I changed the position of the microphones, placing them a bit further apart from each other and also further from the piano top lid. I think that improved the "stereo" quality of the recording and also incorporated a bit more reverb from the room. It is strange how much the microphone position interferes with the sound quality. I did a lot of experimentation and I think the current setting delivers the most pleasant sound, to my ears anyway. It is good to hear that you noticed the "improvement".

You are welcome! And I do enjoy my reunion with the piano very much and hope to stay with it for the rest of my life. I have few other engrossing hobbies (painting and knitting to name a couple), but nothing brings as much joy as music.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts about Bach. I think you are right about multitude of possible interpretations, but I'm still little puzzled about mental effort it takes me to digest his music now.

Schumann's Op. 15 is the reason I started to listen to ALL and EVERYTHING I can find of his music. I got #1 of the Op. 15 firmly in my hands and heart now and hope I can record it decently for one of the future recitals. I will go to Op. 68 before I do anything further with the Op.15 though. I need to understand it better. His music became like a new friend for me, I want to know everything about it.

Keep it up! We are listening smile

#55: Bravo! Very good! And what a difference a year makes! I'm not a teacher, but I can see how much more flexible your wrists are and how much more control over dynamics you demonstrate. You are continuing being an inspiration. Thank you for sharing your progress!

I added few pieces to my to-do list because I really liked listening to you play them. Video quality and the comments for YouTube video are great as always.

Thank you very much! I am very happy to hear that I am somehow being able to inspire others smile
I will strive to keep up the consistency. I am enjoying the journey, but sometimes I feel stressed about having to record a new piece every Sunday. That resolve is really helping me progress and that was the only reason I was doing it. But now, after hearing that there are people enjoying my recordings, I have much more motivation to keep doing it. So, thank you very much for your support!
