I have the same opus listed as being by Victor Alphonse Duvernoy (Kalmus) and Jean-Baptiste Duvernoy (Several publishers) - Opus 176, Twenty-five Elementary Studies. But the 2 are clearly different composers.

Which one of these French pianists composed these delightful studies? And why the confusion?

Yes they are. For me Jean Baptiste Duvernoy is the composers of these etudes. Victor was born some 40 years later. Seems like these etudes and a few others is the core of what he composed. He was essentially a music teacher. You can find these under imslp.
