I can't promise to submit since my preparation habits suck these days. But I promise to admin any of the ones I vote for (20th, rare, female, Scarlatti, preludes)
BTW did we not already have a French recital? EDIT: I see we did and there's no reason not to repeat.

So I am looking for suggestions for other recitals. Here are the recitals we have had, going all the way back to 2013. The number in parentheses is the number of submissions.

Grieg (64) Sept 2013
Joplin‎ (24) March 2014
Tchaikovsky (39) April 2014
Schumann (83) March 2015
Great American Songbook (58) Sept 2015
Baroque (49) April 2016
Russian (44) Oct 2016
French (42) April 2017
Spanish Latin American (29) Sept 2017
The Waltz (43) March 2018
Debussy (22) June 2018
Slavic (18) Oct 2018
Nordic (23) Oct 2019

No reason we can't repeat something if there is interest - Schumann was certainly popular. On the other hand, how did we miss Chopin? Or Classical, Bach, modern?

Chime in with your suggestions!

Sam

There was also a Pop Themed Recital, in 2016.

I have to agree. The subforum seems to get 'lost', no bolding of new posts etc. I keep forgetting to check, and also did not see this new thread. Very bad place for this.

Question: What is the PW definition of 20th+ century classical music ?
'Officially' it's defined thus: music written in the European tradition during a period lasting approximately from 1750 to 1830

There are several pieces written early 20th that are 'classical' to me, and others that I'm not so sure of really.

Quote from 'West Wing': "If it was written this afternoon, it isn't classical."

I'm afraid there is no good defition. Often it is referred as 20th century art music instead. But the themed recitals can be a bit flexible. If it feels classical to you, it's fine imo smile

The term "Classical" has two meanings (at least the way I learned it).

Classical Period: The period of music history from the death of Bach to the death of Beethoven. Of course, those dates are arbitrary, and you can find music that seems to fit outside those dates. But they are convenient markers.

Classical Music: "Art" music of all periods, from the beginning of musical notation to today. Please don't ask me for a better definition - I don't have one. Like somebody said once, "I can't define art, but I know it when I see it."

Sam, I don't blame you LOL
Some of these 'categories' in general get a bit blurry. Some music written for movies, we call 'movie themes', but had they not been written specifically for a certain movie, it would have been a symphony, putting it squarely in the 'classical' box. Hans Zimmer comes to mind...

Apologies if some of these are included above. I’m up for preparing anything but if I had to choose this time around my vote would be:
Schubert
Mozart
Haydn

I can't find any of the old themed recitals, prior to Nordic. Are they listed somewhere 'special', like the quarterlies are?

Wait a sec ... did you downvote Rare Gems, and French composers? They had higher numbers before ...
