I have a Yamaha CSP-170 and have been using some incredibly cheap headphones that sound terrible.

Any recommendations from the hive mind would be much appreciated!

I'm willing to spend the $$ for quality.

I really haven't explored the range. I would prefer to keep things under $300.

Safe to assume that good options exist below that target?

You can search the PW threads for ideas like the 99$ (or less when on sale) Sennheiser 559, or pay a lot more for the essentially identical 599.

If you give the 559 and 599 a listen, I suggest you listen to the reference-grade HD650's too. They were Sennheiser's flagship headphones until 10 years ago. You can get them on Massdrop for $220. If I didn't already have HD800s, I would be happy with the HD650s.

Second the HD650 from Sennheiser. They sound great. Very clean lows and highs.

The HD650 or 6xx is pretty good. It is a bit heavy in weight, clamps a bit too hard on the head, and a bit dark sounding for my tastes.

I don't think a typical cheap digital piano headphone stage can run these headphones very well given the 300 ohm impedance on marketing materials (and maybe sensitivity around 100 dB at 1V, 1 kHz although I don't see an official spec and a range of estimates). You could always buy a separate amplifier if you really want power hungry headphones like the HD650.

The 800 is awesome with a good, powerful amp, but uber expensive.

A budget is ...
1. an estimate, often itemized, of expected income and expense for a given period in the future.
2. a plan of operations based on such an estimate.
3. an itemized allotment of funds, time, etc., for a given period.

I tried out my HD-598's on my just-delivered Casio PX-870 today, and it sounded absolutely amazing! Tomorrow I'll test my Bang & Olufsen H2's.

Seems to be somewhat of a consensus around the 650's.

Not familiar with amps referenced. Any recommendations?

No Beyer boys have chimed in yet. Nor the Grado gang. Nor the Sons of Sony.
The preponderance of Senn users doesn't make a consensus. (Don't close the polls too early!)

Sorry for not being clear - I don't like these so much.

I found the 650s pretty good but certainly not great. They are heavy and tire my neck over time. They clamp hard and hurt my head over time. They sound somewhat dark and muffled to my ears. They also need a powerful amp if you are going to connect them to typical consumer gadgets.

Lightweight, open-backed headphones with little clamping force are my favourites. Can't even notice they are on your head over time. I have some Sony which are only for Asian markets so unfortunately those are not available to most PW members.

Haha. Will leave the polls open for awhile. No major rush.

Really just a little intimidated by all of the options. Appreciate all of the advice and experience here.

Don't be reluctant to appreciate your own experience.

To the OP: I agree with Mac. Everyone's hearing is different, and if, for example, you are suffering from some high-frequency hearing loss, which is common and can be age-related, then your impression of a particular pair of headphones may be very different from that of a young person with perfect hearing. There is no substitution for trying headphones out yourself. If you can't get to a place with headphones, then you may still need to try them out, but via an Amazon.com, or similar. Buy a few pairs and keep the best and return the rest.
