I was at an estate sale today and they had a Baldwin 5045 upright for $300. I had never seen one of those before and I was shocked at how good it played/sounded. A very nice instrument. Crazy thing was there was a Fender telecaster sitting right next to it that they wanted $800 for. We live in a crazy world.

Everything can be had for pennies on the dollar if you are patient and cast a wide net.

Yes it does happen. When the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland switched from owning their own pianos to leasing them, they sold two Yamaha CFIIIS grand pianos for £12,000 each....... At the time I was in the market for a piano but I couldn't take a 9 footer.

I feel like I got a good deal on all my pianos, price wise. I can't afford anything other than a reasonable price. smile

The only thing I feel like I've actually way overpaid for is new vehicles. Don't think they are worth what they cost, new ones anyway.

Well, Marcus, did you buy the Baldwin upright piano? smile

With used pianos especially, it is a buyer's market. It's really in your favor if you have the means and desire to transport them. There's lots of decent free uprights and sub $300 grands out there. Of course, lots of them are pretty far gone and not worth getting, but there are plenty of smoking deals to be found.

Nice Spring Lake reference. I am pretty sure the diving pig was gone long before I moved to San Marcos..

The 99% figure is way too high, pure hyperbole.. It's at least better than 98.5%. smile

Not in my area. This is the land of $3000 Chickerings and 4'11" Kimballs, LOL.

I used to be a guitar guy, along with a few other stringed instruments, until a severe finger injury messed up my fingertip on my left hand index finger. Almost cut it off and had to have surgery to save the finger; was in the hospital for 3 days. I can still play the stringed instruments some, but one needs good, calloused fingertips to play best.

Ironically, that injury steered me toward the piano. The hand/finger injury didn't seem to impair my playing the piano/keyboard. I do miss my guitars, Cadillacs and hillbilly music... (Dwight Yoakam smile ). Well, I never had or really wanted a Cadillac, and I can still jam-out with some hillbilly music on the piano, so things aren't as bad as them seem... smile

It would be nice if it was a little bigger.. but the price is right.

Eh...the part of me that sits on the internet too much thinks that ad is either a scam or not correctly listed.

p.s. were you there when the Blue Goat Gourmet existed?

It might be a legit ad. I was able to get a pretty nice 1912 Knabe for $100, so $50 for that Chickering seems reasonable.

I am not sure if the Blue Goat Gormet was around, but either way, I never went to it.

I have never paid much for a piano. I couldn't believe the deal I got on the big Bluthner!

I have bought three acoustics as an adult ... all a great deal. There are several factors: wanting a better piano than you can afford and then being willing to spend the time and leg work to find it at a price you can pay.

It is just a necessity with champagne tastes on a beer pocketbook.... but ultimately rewarding.

I’m sorry to hear about your finger injury. That is my nightmare. I used to build furniture for myself in a cabinetmaker’s shop but I don’t do that anymore. I can’t believe I ever took the risk. These days, I try to avoid anything that has blades, spinning or otherwise.

You could try nylon stringed classical guitars! I play nylon strings and I have no calluses at all on my finger tips. I put aloe on my hands every night to keep them soft. I played the violin for a decade and had callouses from that. I don’t like steel strings anymore, to be honest, like playing barbed wire.

That certainly looks like a great deal, and I live in the same state, but, alas, I have no room for a grand.

I would expect pianos to be like any other depreciating asset, that they lose their value with time and are subject to wear, like cars. I don’t think people are willing to give away recently made fine pianos although the prices for such can be very good, as I have noticed.

Rick - sorry to hear about your hand injury. I too avoid spinning blades and sanders whenever I can. Years ago when I had long hair I was helping a friend in a small boot and shoe repair shop. My hair WASNT tied back. I heard the phone and turned my head and a chunk of my hair got caught in a spinning sander at eye level and instantly pulled my head toward the sander and sanded skin and hair until I finally hit the off button. The result wasn’t pretty. No hospital stay but no more boot repair. Hair regrew and scalp healed.
Sorry to the OP for drifting OT.
It’s rather hard in my area to get great deals on good instruments. Or pick ups. 😢
