Hi all this is my first post on pianoworld. Am an adult beginner slowly making my way through Alfred’s All-In-One piano book which is a fantastic volume. Am up to Little Brown Jug, which is very challenging! My question for the forum is it has just struck me that I could really do with another book that has all the scales in and the chords, so I can quickly reference them. There are so many available I don’t know which to get, does anyone have a favourite they could recommend?

Hi Jytte and Animisha, that Alfred scales book looks exactly what I was after thanks very much; just done a search on it and has everything I need so i’ll get that one. Thanks for the advice 😀

I have that Alfred's book, too. It's very complete.

The Alfred's course gets to scales divided between the hands first. You'll be finished the first two volumes before you need anything more demanding, scalewise, than what's already included in the course.
The books with the scales in ARE only reference material. They don't tell you how to learn them or practise them. In that respect they're as effective as a fart in a hurricane.
If you want to do scales, get a teacher first and a couple of years under your belt.

Ah that is interesting to know! Thanks It is more than interesting. It is true. The Alfred's All In One book that you have is all you need for quite some time. If you achieve a high level of achievement with each lesson, you will be a very good player when you finish. All that other stuff you are considering purchasing will only distract you from that. Just keep working hard on what you have. Good Luck

I used this Hanon Book. it is however a reference only and as mentioned above, allow your teacher to help show you how to do scales properly before using it. A dmd mentioned, it may be unnecessary for you right now, but I too was curious to learn more than just the Alfreds material. That said, I didn’t begin scales until I finished the Alfreds.

That said, I didn’t begin scales until I finished the Alfreds. Did you actually finish-finish Alfreds? Because I don't think I've ever met anyone who actually really finished all 3 Alfred volumes!

I am enjoying learning the piano so much I want to run before I can walk, which i guess is not uncommon. Thanks cmb and progman for further suggestions. Am determined to finish Alfred all in one, then going to move onto book 2. I have found the book extraordinarily helpful, and this is despite a lot of the songs not really being to my taste!

I am enjoying learning the piano so much I want to run before I can walk, which i guess is not uncommon. Lovely feeling Paul! Instead of running, when you feel like practising more but are done for today with practising your Alfred's pieces, get another beginner's book and practise some other pieces that are on your level. Alternatively, browse the Internet for easy piano pieces, there is a lot out there for free.

Alfred's "The Complete Book of Scales, Chords, Arpeggios & Cadences" is an excellent reference and well priced at $10.99. PW member Philip Johnston has a nice approach to learning scales with his text titled, "Scales Bootcamp". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkfnlYtFag8
