Playing by ear is good. Everybody should do it.
How else would a concert pianist play Happy Birthday? In Schulz-Evler's virtuosic arrangement?

Actually, don't all children play by ear, when given a toy keyboard for their 3rd birthday? (Not that I ever had one, not even on my 30th birthday cry).

Though I wouldn't try to play this stuff by ear:

On the other hand, this is easy to play by ear (as I once did on a ship whistle):

"I don't play accurately - anyone can play accurately - but I play with wonderful expression. As far as the piano is concerned, sentiment is my forte. I keep science for Life."
