Does anybody know anything about the quality of Wurlitzer Pianos of this era? We are looking at a Kincaid and a Wurlitzer - both used - to purchase for our son to practice on. He just started lessons this September and enjoys it so he needs something to practice on. We realize that we will have to have it tuned, etc. but the prices are really good. People that have them had them for the same reasons and just don't need them anymore. Help please. Thanks.

The Wurlitzer of the 60's wasn't much better than the Kincaid, but it was better.

How much are thry asking, and is it a dealership or a private sale?

They are asking $150.00 - of course we will have to pick it up and have it tuned. It is in great shape - considering it is from 1969. This person has owned it the whole time. It is a Spinet. The Kincaid is also about that old and they are saying it is "German" made. It is in excellent shape. ??????

Unless we sold one of the Carolinas to the Germans, I'd say they were mistaken. wink

$150's about what it us worth.

What is a good beginning piano for a 8.5 year old boy? He started taking in Sept - likes it - but we need a piano for him to practice on. Somebody suggested a digital piano - Yamaha or Kawai. The Yamaha is less. I have looked at Cable, Kincaid, Kimball, Howard, Wurlitzer, Mason-Hamlin - all old - from around the 60's mostly. I am overwhelmed.

Incidently, where were Kincaid pianos manufactured? What on earth possessed them to say "German" made? Is there any connection at all? Thanks.

Made in Morgantown, NC. Not far from Hickory! Far from Berlin.

I own a Wurlitzer spinet from the early 60's. My grandmother purchased it for my parents before I was born. I've kept it tuned and I believe that mine is in good shape. My son just turned 9 and he's been playing it for a few years.

We began our grand piano search 6 months ago, and for what it's worth, I'd rather play my nicely tuned and maintained spinet than 80% of the sub-10K pianos out there! Some of the dealers can't believe how well my son plays their grands when they learn that he's been on our spinet. We're keeping it after we get the grand as a spare piano. From middle c down one octave, the notes sound really nice. Good luck!

My mother still has the 1960s-era Wurlitzer I learned on. It is showing its age and lack of maintenance--she doesn't grasp the need for a pinao to be tuned now and then--but it was a solid instrument. It probably still could be, if a good tech got hold of it.

I've recently played a number of new Pearl River and Yamaha uprights. My old Wurlitzer, in its better days, was much more pleasant to play than most of them. It had a much better action and sound than the Pearl Rivers and the lower-end (made in the U.S.) Yamahas. The Japanese-made Yamaha U1 was the most comparable, in terms of touch and sound.

Having seen what time has done to my old piano, I'd say definitely get a technician to assess how well the Wurlitzer has aged. If it has been maintained well, it could be a good buy.

My folds have a 1960s Wurlitzer spinet. It's the piano I grew up playing. I always thought it was easy to play and sounded OK.

BUT THEN -- I met Norbert, mortgaged my future and POW!! my Sauter 185 is here and the Wurlitzer seems very old.........

Regards,

John, Eh?

Oops, my 'folds' are none of your bees wax.

My 'folks' have the piano.
