I am looking to buy a piano of around $5000. One of the local music stores has a brand new Baldwin BP1 listed for $5500. As a beginner in piano, I liked the feel of the piano but cannot really tell much more beyond the feel of the keys and the shinning paint.
Does anyone have experience playing a Baldwin BP1? Is this a good quality piano that can be reliable for ten or more years? Is $5500 a good price?
Thank you in advance!

This page will help you with pricing for Baldwin. The price quoted is 20% off the SMP price, which generally represents a fair discount, but for some brands you can get a much larger discount so you should probably check prices somewhere else to see if that is in line. That model is a recreation of an old teaching piano that Baldwin made, it seems to be generally well thought of.

This might be helpful as well.

Yes - the price is fair - and the piano, with proper maintenance, should last for ten years or more. Plus it comes with a warranty. Don't know what other dealers are in your area, but if you can, I would encourage you to try other brands for comparison.

The Chinese Baldwins I have tuned seem to be better than the last US made Baldwins.

Also - there is plenty of info on the internet regarding the Baldwin BP1. Most of it is marketing hype - but you can still learn about the specifications of the piano.(i.e., what's under the shiny varnish). smile

My first piano was a 1991 Baldwin upright, built in the US. I loved the Baldwin sound. I thought the action was good for an upright. I’m hoping that the new Baldwin’s manufactured in China can recreate and the Baldwin’s pianos that I grew up with.

Thank you all for the great suggestions! I called around, unfortunately no other piano store within driving distances has the Baldwin BP1 in stock...they all have many Yamaha's and Kawai's. One store suggested Kawai K200, Yamaha B2, or a Ritmuller 121 for a comparable piano of similar price ticket. On spec sheet, the Baldwin looks way better than either the K200 or B2. I am almost certain that I would like a taller upright than a shorter one -- it simply looks better and probably sounds better too. Nevertheless, I am going to make a trip to the stores to try the different models.
Are there other brands/models with the price range of $5000 that I should check out? Thanks again!

If the Ritmuller is a UH 121RA - Premium Series - then yes.

If it is a UP 121RB - Performance Series - then no.

I'm sure you could get a Kawai UST-9 for $5000, it's targeted at the university/teaching market so it's very well made. It's 46" so a bit shorter than the Baldwin.

At 34% off the SMP price, I’m sure most of the US based forum members couldn’t get one for that amount in most markets...but the model’s been around long enough that there may be a few used ones for sale.

The Baldwin BP-1 is more likely at that price. If you search the threads for “institutional models”, we’ve discussed the pros and cons of institutional models fairly recently.

I got 39% off SMP on my GL-10 and there are two other people on the forum that got better prices than I did.
