Hi all, I am looking into a home study/correspondence course. I know that apprenticing with a local tuner in person is ideal, but I have none within reasonable distance. I’m hoping to do the home study method to get my skills developed before looking into an apprenticeship. I’m wondering if anyone would care to speak of a preferred course. I am aware of the American School, Randy Potter School, and Rick Butler School. Rick Butler seems to offer the most personal attention and feedback to each student. Anyone with experience with these courses (or others) care to comment on their quality, value, and ability to prepare for the PTG exams? Hoping to make the best decision to get started in the next month or so. Thank you so much!

You can get a couple of old pianos to work on, if you have some room. Get some books: Arthur Reblitz, "Piano Servicing, Tuning, and Rebuilding and Mario Igrec, "Pianos Inside Out" are great. The latter is more up-to-date, comprehensive, and expensive. Join the Piano Technicians Guild. How far is it to your local PTG chapter? Mine is an hour and a half each way and I still find it well worth the trip each month. The relationships you develop there will be valuable! People there may know someone more local to you who can help you. The local chapter may also have action models you can borrow to gain an understanding of how grand and vertical piano actions work. The PTG home office has lots of educational materials, some specifically for the exams. They also put on conventions where you can take classes from and get to meet some of the best technicians in the business. The monthly journal is entertaining and a great source of ideas.
