Not the usual variant of this common topic...

On the Frasier show, Frasier's apartment always had a Steinway on prominent display. I was surprised just now to see a Yamaha in his apartment on an old Cheers rerun. wink

Actually, for the first season or two, Frasier had a "no-name" piano in the background. It could have been a Steinway, but in the first episode the key cover was closed and later, even when it was open, there was no visible name on the piano. (Believe me, I always look. My wife gets frustrated when we are watching a movie or TV show and I say, "Baldwin Artist Series, model L" out of the blue)

It became a product placement for S&S after the series became established.

I have to admit that I never saw his apartment in Cheers. Now I have to go find it. smile

One of the funniest things about Frasier was his pretentiousness. Everything he owned or did showed seemed to be calculated to make him appear worldly and sophisticated, but the viewer suspected he didn't really know the difference. At least that's my take.

I'm surprised he had a Steinway, after all everyone has heard of Steinway. I think a Bösendorfer would have been much more him. Maybe Fazioli or any German piano if they were making the series today.

On second thoughts, a Hamburg Steinway would have done the trick. It would be different from the Steinways of his associates.

Bill,

I am impressed! I assume you mean that the placed Steinway first appeared in that episode. That is much later than I would have guessed, but I bow to your confident and exact answer. How did you find this out... or are you a Frasier buff? smile

Credit the decision to unsophisticated writers? Or, if as I suspect it was a paid placement, then Steinway simply made the deal.

My 2 cents,

Probably.

Steinway is a brand that all viewers would recognize and consider excellent.... few TV viewers would recognize other brands, no matter how worthy outside of Yamaha, Steinway and Kawai. Steinway would be perceived by them as being more valuable.

I have a Yama-way piano. I took an old Yamaha C7 and put a Steinway style soundboard and Steinway hammers in it. Sounds jut as fabulous and avoids the high price tag.

You could start a new company! I would love a Yamaway...or even a Steinwai!

Who but the piano nerds here would notice or care what piano was in Frasier’s apartment in the show? 🤣
I used to watch the show Frasier regularly but did remember seeing the Steinway fallboard. My two favorite characters were Niles, his even more pretentious brother, and Eddie the Jack Russell terrier.

Great show! Too bad they don't make them like that anymore! The pretentiousness of the two and their rivalry each to out-pretention the other was what made the show so much fun.

Maybe they still make good sitcoms, but I can no longer abide and therefore cannot watch commercial television!

And I seriously doubt that it sounds anywhere near as good as a real C7 or a C.

You do have recordings to prove me wrong, of course, don't you?

Oh, I didn't realize that it wasn't a Steinway all the way through.

I always try to see what brand of pianos are on shows and movies too. Usually it seems to be obscured. Even on this episode, it was blurry or hard to see, and then in one scene you get a glimpse of "...maha" sticking out from behind someone!

Perhaps he meant season 5 for the Yamaha. ?? It was a season 5 episode I was watching.

Me either. In fact, I cut the cable about 18 months ago. The girls stream everything when they're home, and nine months a year they're not home anyway. So I cut TV and phone out of the cable package, and just have internet access now.

These are some old DVDs I was watching. If I'm watching something, it's generally an old rerun. Something comforting about old familiar stuff. Cheers is light and easy. I like Frasier though too...it's a bit more cerebral.
