Hey folks, many of the Joplin Ragtimes have the form AABBACCDD. Sometimes that starts to feel like too many times through the A section. What are your thoughts on taking out the second A and playing ABBACCDD?

That would save what, 45 seconds? My little personal opinion: if I like a piece, I play it whole.

It's all very arbitrary and nothing is rigid. Several of James Scott's use a repeat of the B strain to conclude, and Magnetic Rag ends with AA+coda. In my own rags I used to like AABBACCA. Just do whatever you fancy.

Hi

I agree with Ted. Depending on the amount of practise time I have available I frequently don't play the repeats at all. Or I may only play the repeats for sections I like and/or enjoy playing the most. So when I play Maple Leaf Rag for the zillionth time I normally play it as ABACDE.

The music isn't sacred, you can do whatever you like with it.

Cheers
