Hi,
I have searched the net high and low. Would anyone have any info on a Baby Grand Peck & Hills # 53470.
I can't even find any history. All I found is a Furniture Company with that name.

Regards

Furniture companies would put their name on pianos made by piano manufacturers that they would sell as their own. This is undoubtedly a piano like that. It is probably quite old, although my family had a Peck & Hills sofa that my parents bought about 1960. I guess that sofa would be quite old now, but the piano might be twice that age.

Big question is who made them for Peck & Hills Furniture company? Im going to see one tomorrow. Think it's gonna be a hard decision.

Much Appreciated.

Beware of baby grands. Bigger is better.

While a vanity-name upright might have been decent, that is rarely the case with grands. It probably is not worth considering.

Hear Hear!

In Britain, lots of these very short grands had the Herrburger Brooks D-type Spring & Loop action, as a way of saving cost, and space inside the piano. They are of an age to require much regulation, and the pianos simply aren't worth it, having been manufactured in the first place subject to every possible cost saving.

Sampler One, did you see the piano? What did you think?

Hi David,
Quite a dilemma. The owner was a very wealthy man who kept the piano as a show piece in the entrance and the only use it got was at christmas he would hire someone to play it. It was obviously true and it was in ALMOST new condition. Why I say almost is the lacquer was like shattered glass in places due to the lobby was in direct sun. I did actually buy the Peck & Hills Baby Grand and I just finished the new lacquer. It was quite an easy job and came out really nice. I am now working on regulating as of tonight but I am trying to figure out why the regulation is so bad. I just looked at it for a bit but my guess is someone messed with it, Hummm , there is literally no wear on the hammers but the strange thing is the let off is almost at its end setting? Tomorrow Ill look into it much more!
I wish I knew who made it for Peck & Hills, seems they made the cabinet and the rest was made by someone??? It does have these strange knuckles , well strange to me . Ill drop a few pics here, maybe giving someone an idea as to what it is..
Thanks.

It looks like a cheap piano from about 100 years ago that has been refinished with new hammers and strings. Any number of manufacturers might have made it.

A good picture of the plate might help, but the chances are still slim.

Why would it make a difference to know what factory it came out of?
