I have owned a N2 since it came out. Really love it. Since N2x is not happening and even if it does it would be expensive to upgrade and I am so jealous of the new CFX sound, I got a YAMAHA P515 and connected them with a MIDI cable. It works great! Of course the CFX sound won't come out of the N2's speaker, but the headphone experience is sooooo much better. Personally I much prefer this setup than using the Garritan CFX with N2 smile
Here is an image of the setup:

Can't you run the audio out from the P515 to the AUX IN of the N2?

Hehe, that’s a pretty unorthodox upgrade but also a wise one since you got the binaural CFX but also a spare portable keyboard smile Can’t complain, can you!

Is this you playing? If that’s not a MIDI file I’m in total awe with your playing of the Barcarolle! You must be a famous pianist! I’ve rarely heard that good playing here on the forum shocked (Or should I say never before I heard Chopin like that over here) And the other piece (Mozart or Haydn sonata?) is so clean and well executed!

BTW that Vocaroo service records in mono frown You better upload to Dropbox.

That's very resourceful and clever! I hope Yamaha is taking heed on the value of this and comes up with a sound-only module that contains the CFX and Bosendorfer sounds with all the functionalities to interface with the Smart Pianist midi and what-have-you, all in a box sans keyboard, with headphone jacks and XLR audio outputs that can be fed into an external sound system. If they sell it for $500 or $750, there may be a market for it. I know I'd definitely buy something like that to turn my N3 into an N3X equivalent.

Dave, The N2 only have one volume control so if I run the P515 to AUX IN of N2 the sound will mix with N2's native sound, which I just tried and really weird laugh

Cyber, Yes, that's me playing. I am just a lazy pianist though. Lazy enough to not wanting to clean living room to get a real grand piano and tune it laugh I'll try dropbox.

Volusiano, the YAMAHA I know would not sell something for anything less if they can sell it for $1500 laugh

You can turn off local control on the N2 in which case you won't hear the internal sound.

You can turn off the internal sounds of the N2 using Local Control Off.

Got beat to the punch!

laugh P515 ACTS as a sound module. I think the main thing that appeals to you is binarual CFX in the new sound engine of yamaha.
This is also a way to play, although the cost is not low.
If Yamaha comes out a sound module likes as Dexibell SX7 but with lower price will be welcome.
Of course, maybe it doesn't fit with yamaha's usual marketing strategy

OMG! I didn't know I can turn Local Control Off. Guess I never bother to read the manual laugh
I just tried wire P515 audio out back to N2 with local control off. Unfortunately, at least to my ear, the sound is much less natural than the N2 original to be usable. Yamaha must have some clever way to utilize the many speakers in N2 to make it more than a big stereo.
Well at least I still got the binarual CFX laugh

That's exactly it--the N2 has multichannel (more than stereo) sampling and output which you miss out on with the stereo aux in. Also there will likely be more latency that you may perceive.

Does the p-515 have the same binaural cfx sound as the N1X/N3X? I hear nothing but adulation and praise for the AG binaural CFX here, but frankly very little said at all about the headphone output quality on the P-515. They're must be some difference (like the smooth release samples), right? Is it the same base sample minus the key-sensot specifics, or a different binaural sample altogether?

Yes, with line out to N2 AUX IN, binarual CFX will be lost, surround channel on board will be lost.
So headphone connected to P515 is necessary. That's why I said cost is not low for this method. wink
