I have been trying to re-adjust the furniture in my room around my piano. And I thought I'd naively browse the web for a bit of inspiration, like reading a home beautiful magazine smile

Why do media photos of grand piano decor, ie Pinterest etc, always show maddeningly impractical placements of pianos, both sonically and environmentally?

Time and time again, I see totally unrealistic settings, with pianos in bay windows, no curtains, the lid opening facing walls and evidently permanently open or right next to fireplaces, inappropriate/dangerous objects
placed on top etc etc..........And under the title...Piano decorating ideas!
Obviously, the decor of a piano room according to these photos is all about the look, and the piano may as well be a table, with no intent other than to glance at it. To anyone who knows nothing about pianos, in my opinion this really is such a fake representation of the reality.

sorry for the rant, just had to get this out to an audience who might have half a chance of empathy over this smile

ha ha, thank you for that positive point! Not sure the lid would support the frame when open if it was installed legs up smile

I think the pictures reflect the fact that many pianos don't get used, kind of like Nordictracks and other exercise equipment.

What always amuses me: some of the chairs and benches, often covered in leopard or zebra print, that decorators use instead of more standard piano benches.

And never any scores in sight.

Sometimes you even see a flat-screen TV mounted over an upright. (I guess nobody in the household practices ALL the time. 😆)

Don’t always believe what you see in a pic .... my piano is immediately next to a fireplace. Before you are horrified, when I bought the piano, the fireplace flue was semi-permanently closed and it is used only as a decoration for the piano 😊

Another pet peeve of mine are photographs with pianos in which the fallboard is closed, sometimes even with the lid on the full stick.

Good grief. I can hear Victor Borge "this piano only has one giant black key..." grin

That's ok. I understand your motive, but I've seen some "lovely" pics where the fire has been flickering away only 2 feet from the piano leg! Anyone know what piano wood fire smells like?!

I'm sure on here, we all have our pet peeves when it comes to the fake representation for something we know better, and is close to our hearts smile

Why?

Because aesthetics don't necessarily conform to the real world. What looks good in photos or print doesn't equal what really IS good practice.

Example: Food photography. What LOOKS good you wouldn't necessarily taste good because the ingredients are arranged and the amounts are there because they look good to the camera, eating that same food is another matter. Folks who make their food based on taste and then take a picture of it aren't necessarily getting the best image.
